Upcoming Events

Tuesday, May 19 - 6:30pm - BWCAW Entry Point Series #1 – Seagull Lake - The Gem of the Gunflint Trail
Nestled in the Center of the Gunflint BWCA area is one of the most well known and most visited entry points of the Eastern BWCA.  With many fantastic campsites and the ever amazing Pictographs on its northern cliffs, no wonder is so popular. Despite the relatively recent fire damage due to the Cavity Lake Fire in 2006 and Ham Lake fire in 2007, this lake is still one of the best entry points to begin both a Beginner and a Veteran BWCA canoeing trip. Come and visit with Steve Schreader, our expert BWCA Staff member, tutored by the ever-wise Bear Paulsen, as he breaks down the Seagull Lake entry point and specifically talks about all the options this entry point holds for any level of skilled paddler.
Entry Points Series Dates:
Tuesday, May 19th:  Seagull Lake
Tuesday, June 2nd:  East Bearskin/ Clearwater Lakes
Tuesday, June 23rd:  Magnetic Lake
Expedition Room, Midwest Mountaineering

Thursday, May 21 - 6:30pm Physiology of Pre, Pro, and Antibiotics: Lessons on the Immune System and Integrative Nutrition
Using art and specialized time lapse videos, Exercise Physiologist Ed Watson explains the science of gut flora physiology, immunity, and function of the entire digestive system. Learn how gut flora physiology (fermentation) is the identical process to performing anaerobic exercise, thus giving you deep insight into the nature of how the entire body works and principles of exercise physiology and nutrition. Pre-registration required. Expedition Room, Midwest Mountaineering

Tuesday, May 26 - 6:30pm - Pack Fitting 101
Escape sore muscles and bruises by learning how to fit your backpack specifically to you.  Paul Jensen will discuss the important issues when choosing a backpack, how to pack it, and what all those straps are for.  We'll even touch on wilderness troubleshooting. When we're done, your pack should feel like a natural extension of your body and not a painful burden.  Bring your pack to adjust it correctly and to practice on. Expedition Room, Midwest Mountaineering

Wednesday, May 27 - 7:00pm - CureSearch for Children's Cancer – Ultimate Hike Information Session
The Ultimate Hike is a life changing, life saving adventure on the Superior Hiking Trail for individuals wanting to face this challenge while raising money towards finding a cure for children's cancer. On August 22nd you'll hike 25 miles in a day (half distance hikes available too).  Through participation in Ultimate Hike for the Cure, you'll experience adventure, accomplish a once-in-a-lifetime goal, make new friends and help Cure-Search find a cure for childhood cancer, a disease that kills more children than all others combined.  Help us – take a hike and save a life!  For more info:  ultimatehike.org. Expedition Room, Midwest Mountaineering

Thursday, May 28 - 6:30pm  Climbing 102
A Climbing 101 clinic is a prerequisite for this clinic.  Carolyn Hansen will provide this opportunity to expand your technical skills and help prepare you for more advanced climbing.  We'll review knots, commands, and belaying, along with more in-depth explanations and uses of climbing gear.  Don't worry; we will still have time to climb! Required:  All climbers must have a completed liability waiver on file at Midwest Mountaineering.  Liability waivers expire at the end of the calendar year and must be re-submitted every year. Pre-registration recommended – limited to 10 participants.  Cost $5, no refunds.  Minimum age 15.  612–339–3433  Climbing Cave, Midwest Mountaineering

Thursday, May 28 - 6:30pm - Living and Working in Yosemite National Park
Yosemite has some of the world's most iconic scenery and what better way to experience all the Park has to offer than to live there!  Having spent a year living, working and exploring Yosemite National Park, Jeff Cepek will share first-hand knowledge of how he made his dream a reality. Yosemite attracts seasonal and permanent employees from all over the world and the application process can be a bit daunting.  This presentation will help to demystify the hiring process as well as provide information on such topics as employment positions, housing options, cost of living, transportation and of course recreational opportunities.  Jeff will answer questions on what daily life is really like and share stunning photos of his four seasons of exploration.  There are employment opportunities for all ages such as summer seasonal work and possible year round positions.  Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls and John Muir are calling!  If you are looking for a way to experience Yosemite as only a few can, attending this presentation is a must!
