Fischer World Cup and NorAm Update

Val di Fiemme, Italy - For the fifth time this season the winner at the weekend’s World Cup Cross Country competition was Marit Björgen (NOR, Fischer Skis and Boots). In a tough double pursuit race Björgen managed to beat Kristina Smigun (EST, Fischer Skis) in the last meters of the race. Third came Gabriella Paruzzi of Italy. "I've never thought I could win this race. Now I know what the hard training during the summer is worth. And not to forget, I had perfect skis today". said a very happy Marit at the finish.

Axel Teichmann (Ger, Fischer Skis) the leader in the overall World Cup celebrated another victory in the man's double pursuit competition. This win was an outstanding achievement as Teichmann fell during the race and injured his shins, and then fought himself back into the leading position and managed to win the race in a very tight sprint. Second was his teammate Jens Filbrich (Ger, Fischer Skis) and third Vincent Vittoz (FRA). Mathias Fredriksson (SWE, Fischer Skis) came 4th.

US Ski Team Members Kris Freeman (Fischer Skis & Boots) placed 42nd and Andrew Johnson 47th in the field of 75. The first period of the Men’s and Women’s World Cup finishes this weekend in Ramsau, Austria with a 15k and 30k mass start freestyle race.

On US soil, Fischer athletes got off to a great start in the Super Tour series at Soldiers Hollow, Utah. On Saturday in the individual classic races, US Ski Team athletes Rebecca Dussault and Kikkan Randall finished second and third behind Olympic Champion Beckie Scott. Five of the top ten women, and ten of the top twenty were on Fischer. In a close men’s race, Subaru Factory Team member Chad Giese led the charge finishing 7 seconds off the lead in second place. The men’s race saw four of the top ten, and eleven of the top 20 on Fischer.

In yesterdays classic sprint race, with half of the men and women’s qualifiers on Fischer the day started good and only got better. In the women’s final, Kikkan Randall, coming off of an exciting week of setting the new American record for xc skiing 100 meters, finished second to World Class Sprinter Beckie Scott. In the men’s field, on a course with a tough early climb and a long high speed downhill, Fischer athletes from different teams with different wax combinations all reported having rocket skis. In the men’s final US Ski Team athlete Andy Newell came out on top, winning his second sprint of the year. Chad Giese, finishing 3rd moved into the yellow bib as Overall Super Tour leader.
