Volunteer Opportunities on the Gunflint Trail

Memorial Day Weekend Tree Planting Event May 26th and 27th

Gunflint Trail, MN - In response to many personal requests to contribute to the renewal of the forest following the recent Ham Lake Fire, the Gunflint Trail invites volunteers to help plant trees over Memorial Day Weekend.

"So many people have called to offer support," said Shari Baker, co-owner of Gunflint Pines and president of the Gunflint Trail Association. "It really makes us feel good to know so many people care. People who have spent any time at all here feel a real affinity for this place, and realize how special it is. The news of the Ham Lake Fire hit them personally. They want to know what they can do to help. It's just amazing."

To address the generous offers of time and assistance, Nancy Seaton of Hungry Jack Outfitters and Chair of the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway Committee, has organized a Gunflint Trail Tree Planting Weekend over Memorial Day. Anyone who is staying on the Gunflint Trail, or can come up for the day, is invited to help plant trees to replace those that were lost in the fire.

"We have red pine, white pine and cedar seedlings to plant. Anyone can help; we'll show them what to do. People should bring garden gloves and a spade or shovel, and dress for any kind of weather." says Nancy. "I know people want to help, and we want to give them that opportunity. One of my guests said she would ‘rearrange her world' to come up and help plant trees."

Tree planting teams will be formed at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27. Volunteers can sign up for either or both days.

"What do I say when people ask what they can do? I tell them to come see us. We want people to understand that it's business as usual on the Gunflint Trail, and the forest and lakes they love are still here," says Deb Mark of Seagull Outfitters.
