WINTER CYCLING - Alaska's Iditabike
Thursday, November 9th at 7 PM

So, you think you're tough? Try riding your bike a hundred miles off-road in Alaska, in February. Cycle through knee deep snow, up icy hills and across the frozen tundra, all-the-while enduring frigid temps and more dark night than sunlight. Toss in encounters with howling wolves, sleds dogs, and roaming moose and you have Judi Lehman's Iditasport experience. Judi will share images, training advice, gear choices and her experiences undertaking this legendary race.

FLY FISHING TYING DEMONSTRATION
Saturday, November 18th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Interested in Fly Tying? Members of the Lew Chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers will be in the store demonstrating fly tying techniques. These experienced fly tyers will answer your questions and demonstrate general fly tying skills, as well as, specific patterns. If you are just getting started, they will be glad to share their experiences regarding tool selection, materials to acquire, and which flys to begin with. If you are more experienced, come by and pick up tips from fellow fly tyers. Can not make the demo? HIKING THE INCA TRAIL & BENEATH THE MATERHORN

Jim Klobuchar is a longtime adventurer and writer whom leads adventure travel excursions all over the planet. Jim will discuss his hiking experiences in Switzerland and his annual trek on the historic Inca Trail in Peru. Highlights of the latter include the journey to Machu Picchu and the Amazon rain forest. Join Jim for slides, advice and to learn more about these two great adventure travel destinations.

INTRODUCTION TO WILDERNESS FIRST AID

This two-hour introductory wilderness first aid clinic will cover the basics of being prepared for emergencies in the backcountry. It will also discuss what is offered in the Standard Wilderness First Aid Course (see description for the class below) available through REI and the Minnesota Safety Council.

WILD SHORE: Exploring Lake Superior by Kayak

Join author and editor of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, Greg Breining, as he discusses his new book Wild Shores. Over two years, this outdoorsman, writer, and world traveler set out to circle Lake Superior by kayak. This means of travel allowed him to visit the lake's places of rare beauty and solitude, experience its wildly varied moods, and see its remote historic sites and isolated communities. Wild Shore is a tale of outdoor adventure, odd characters, humorous stories, and quiet reflection.

WINTER CAMPING 101

This is a clinic to help add another season to your camping adventures. An REI employee will share trip-tested information on dressing to stay warm and selecting equipment appropriate for winter use. Experience how serene the backcountry can be without the crowds and mosquitoes.

CLASSES

WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSE
Saturday, Dec. 2nd & Sunday, Dec. 3rd

The Minnesota Safety Council and REI are offering a 16 hour standard Wilderness First Aid Course. Wilderness First Aid is designed for backcountry enthusiasts who may experience medical emergencies when emergency services are not an option. WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLIMBING CLASSES

The class is an introductory course taught by a certified Vertical Endeavors instructor. The lesson will cover equipment selection, knot tying, belay technique, rope work, climbing commands, and safety issues. The course fee is $20 for REI members, $25 for non-members, and includes the use of climbing shoes and a harness. Classes are offered from 6PM - 9PM, every Wednesday night on the REI Pinnacle at the Bloomington store. All students must be at least 14 years of age. Advanced registration and payment is required.
