Chipaloppet 2000

The 1st Annual Chipaloppet was held in 1997 at the Piedmont trails in Duluth. We gathered a contingency of 12 skiers the first year for the classic 2 x 6-km classic relay. The novelty of the Chipaloppet (besides being the only race called the Chipaloppet), is that the relay teams are chosen randomly from a hat. The first Chipaloppet participants were treated to fine dining (Little Debbie Swiss cake rolls and Mtn. Dew). Scott Chapin and Chip Tabor teamed up for victory. JoAnn Hanowski won best-dressed hands down (wearing a red and white checkered skirt is hard to beat!).

After a three year hiatus, it was once again time for MN's premiere event - the 2nd Annual Chipaloppet. Currently living in Boulder (CO), I enlisted the help of my brother Marty as head race organizer. The venue changed to a 2 x 3-km freestyle relay, with numbers soaring to 15! The event was held at MN's skiing mecca, Riverside park in St.Cloud (MN) - a place where many of us St.Cloudites have skied endless loops in pursuit of ...???? ... doing more loops. The participants were blessed with several inches of new snow over an immaculately groomed trail (thanks Keith!), along with temps that would prevent any loss of snow. Bob Skow and Dave Nelson linked up for the win, each taking home the Billy Bass Singing Sensation grand prize. Veteran skiers, Bill Callas and Marty Tabor, set themselves among the priveleged few (including myself) to have successfully completed all Chipaloppets. Farthest away awards went to the Nelson clan who drove down for the event from north of Duluth. The #1 sponsor went to Charlie Maternus for the delicious chocolate medallions bestowed upon each participant.
