New Biathlon Club Seeks Members and Support

The newly formed Wisconsin Biathlon Club is looking for individuals who are interested in participating in winter biathlon, the exciting winter sport that combines the disciplines of cross country skiing and rifle marksmanship. The challenge of biathlon is the contrast in disciplines; the all out exertion of cross country skiing and the calm, steady hand of target shooting. Best of all biathlon is an activity that can be enjoyed by men and women of all ages and abilities.

According to a club organizer Pete Murphy, the midwest is strongest division for biathlon in the United States. Area states like Minnesota have excellent biathlon programs already in place. We dont see any reason why there cant be a sucessful club here in Wisconsin. The club is developing a plan for the construction of a biathlon facility in SE Wisconsin. Currently there is no operational biathlon range in Wisconsin for practice, training, and competition, but we are looking into several possible sites says Murphy. Wisconsin and Illinois have thousands of nordic enthusiasts, which make it a great place to establish a new biathlon program. We hope to have instruction and programs for all levels, as well as competitions, clinics, and events. Before this can take place the Wisconsin Biathlon Club is working to gather support for their proposed facility. We hope to present a plan to the state of Wisconsin in the near future, and the more supports we have, the greater chance for some state funding.

If you are interested in winter biathlon or would like to help support the Wisconsin Biathlon Clubs biathlon facility proposal, please contact them at P.O. Box 14191, West Allis, WI 53214 or visit their website at www.wisconsinbiathlon.com.
