CCSA: NMU Dominates Postseason Awards

Northern Michigan swept the CCSA postseason awards with Rosie Frankowski and Erik Soderman earning regional skier of the year honors, and head coach Sten Fjeldheim collecting both the men’s and women’s coach of the year award.

NCAA Championships Freestyle Coverage

The NCAA Championships in Middlebury, Vermont, resumed Sunday with the womens 15K and mens 20K mass start freestyle races. In the womens race, NMU's Rosie Frankowski skied to the top Midwest time, moving up from 11th early on to finish 7th overall. Former Minnesota State champ Annie Hart was 8th. Joanne Reid, CU, broke away to claim the womens title. The mens race came down to a pack sprint of 10, with Miles Havlick, UU, taking the win. NMU posted two in the top 10 with Erik Soderman 4th and Kyle Bratrud 10th. Jeremy Hecker, CSS, had an awesome race as well, finishing 11th.

The NCAA Championships classical skiing events took place Thursday morning in Middlebury, VT. Rune Oedegaard, CU, won the mens 10K, Anja Gruber, UVM, took the womens 5K. Top Midwest skiers were Erik Soderman, NMU, 10th and Mary Kate Cirelli, NMU, 15th. Former Minnesota State champ Annie Hart, Dartmouth, skied a strong race finishing 7th.

CCSA Skiers Prepare for NCAA Championships

The CCSA skiers begin their national championship adventure in earnest Thursday, as they line up against the nation's top collegiate skiers at the NCAA Championships in Middlebury, Vt. Of the thirteen skiers, representing three schools (Northern Michigan, Alaska and St. Scholastica), eight will be making their first appearance at nationals.

NCAA Central Region Champs Freestyle Results

The NCAA Central Region Championships concluded Sunday with the freestyle races. NMU swept the mens 15K podium with George Cartwright leading the way. Alyson McPhetres, UAF, pulled out the womens 10K victory and helped lead her team to the overall title. NMU won the mens team title. NCAA berths will be announced Tuesday.

Day 1 of the NCAA Central Region Champs at Michigan Tech featured the classical races. Alaska skiers took the top two spots in both the mens 10K as well as the womens 5K. Freshman Michael Fehrehbach earned his first career CCSA win, and the Nanooks’ Aly McPhetres won her second straight collegiate race in what proved to be a tricky waxing day on the women’s side.

CCSA Announces All-Conference Awards

Northern Michigan and Alaska skiers decorated the all-CCSA teams, as seven Wildcats and Nanooks collected conference awards. NMU led the way with seven first-team awards, the most of any school, while St. Scholastica earned two-first team honors as well.

The CCSA Championships wrapped up Sunday with the 15K and 20K freestyle races at Mount Itasca. Alyson McPhetres, UAF, took the womens 15K victory in a close battle over Rosie Frankowski, NMU. NMU teammates Erik Soderman and Kyle Bratrud had a rematch Sunday, with Soderman coming out ahead again, this time by a mere 1.1 seconds after 20K of racing.

Day 1 of the CCSA Championships at Mt Itasca featured the 5K and 10K classical races. NMU's Erik Soderman won the mens 10K, just five seconds ahead of teammate Kyle Bratrud. Raphaela Sieber, UAF, topped the womens 5K field.

CCSA: Thrilling finish helps Northern Michigan claim Saints Invitational title

On an afternoon with plenty of drama and excitement, it was Northern Michigan left celebrating in the end, as victories for George Cartwright in the men’s 20K freestyle and for Rosie Frankowski in the women’s 15K skate handed the Wildcats the overall team title at the Saints Invitational on Sunday.

Michigan Tech Opener Results

The Midwest collegiate racing season got underway over the weekend with the Michigan Tech Opener series. Saturday featured 5K womens and 10K mens classical races with NMU skiers Mary Kate Cirelli and Erik Soderman posting the top collegiate times. Sunday saw two more NMU skiers taking the top of the podium as Rosie Frankowski and George Cartwright won the 8K and 12K freestyle races.
