Racing Outlook

January 3, 2011

Updates on the upcoming events...
  • Jan 4 Elver Park Series (Madison, WI)
    • Jan 4 update:
As many of you may have surmised the recent warm weather has made a mess of the ski course at Ever Park. There is a little snow predicted for tonight but only a small amount. As of now we have made the decision to cancel the race scheduled for This Tuesday Jan 4th. Let's hope that there is more snow on the way.
      - Greg Jones, race organization
  • Jan 5 Lapham Peak Series (Delafield, WI)
    • Jan 3 update:
There will be a race at Lapham on Wednesday night for high school and adults. It will be a lap race on the manmade snow. We had a lap race last year one night that was very successful.
      - Kris Maki, race director
  • Jan 5 MYSL Team Sprint Series (Minneapolis, MN)
    • Jan 4 update:
Weather and trails will be great for the season-opener of the 2011 Team Sprint Series. First night will feature 6 x 1.2k. City Conference High School sprints will be happening too, so it will be a ski festival under the lights!
      - Amy Cichanowski, race director
  • Jan 5 Elm Creek Series (Maple Grove, MN)
    • Jan 2 update:
The forecast for the Wed. night Elm Creek TT/Relay races: the evening temperature is in low teens, high in low 20s (the warmest day of the week), with 30% chance of flurries. The race course is the full 5K lit loop including Valley, Thicket, and Northern Light trails. Race registration is at 6:30pm-6:55pm. Skate race starts at 7pm, and classic race starts at 7:30pm.
      - Amy Xu, race organization
  • Jan 8 Mesabi East Invite - High School (Biwabik, MN)
    • Jan 6 update:
Mesabi East XC race time will move from 10AM to 11AM due to extreme temps and wind chills. The race is STILL on. Bib pick up will be Friday 1/7 2-6PM, and Sat. AM from 7:30AM-9:30AM Coaches meeting will be at 10AM in the sports dorm. Almost 1200 HS racers are expected.
      - John Filander, race organization
  • Jan 8 Pre-Loppet (Minneapolis, MN)
    • Jan 6 update:
The Pre-Loppet has added a classic division for the race.   Skiers will be asked their technique choice when they come for bib pickup on Saturday morning.  There are currently no plans to delay the start -- it will be 10 am as planned.
      - Bruce Adelsman
    • Jan 3 update 2:
Same course as last year. Start in stadium - part of Hap Loop (will do a skier's choice up the "wall" to the maintenance building loop) - Back-40 - Hap Loop to Judy Loop - finish Hap Loop back to stadium - take newly completed trail down from stadium to bridge (straighter - without the S-turn) - Front-9 - Under 55 - JD Rivers - across Wirth Lake (groomed it today again and with new snow should be getting better) - Jar Hill - cross Wirth and finish on east side of Wirth. Expecting record numbers (based on much better pre-registration than ever combined with winter . . .).
      - Mike Erickson, race director
    • Jan 3 update:
Note the start time is 10 am.   Race calendar had last year's start time -- it has been corrected.  10 am start time.
      - Bruce Adelsman
  • Jan 8 Valley Spur Ski Bash (Munising, MI)
    • Jan 4 update:
While we got the warm weather and rain last week, we have an excellent base. With NW wind tomorrow night the NWS is predicting 1-2" and then Thursday the wind goes due N, therefore they are calling for 4-7" during the day. Fri. and Sat. will add some more snow showers. The course for the 12K Eki Loppet and 24K Big Foot's Revenge should be in great shape.
      - John Gierke, race organization
  • Jan 8 Waukesha County X-C Ski Race (Waukesha, WI)
    • Jan 5 update:
      Race has been cancelled.
      - Bruce Adelsman
    • Jan 3 update:
The recent weather has played havoc with area trails. Organizers plan to make a decision on Wednesday.  Stay tuned.
      - Bruce Adelsman
  • Jan 8 Dam Phunski Race (La Farge, WI)
    • Jan 7 update:
Organizers have pushed the start time back to 10:30 am.
      - Bruce Adelsman
    • Jan 6 update:
The Dam Phunski is on. The skate course will be fast and the classic track will be shallow, but it's on.
      - Sadie Urban, race organization
    • Jan 4 update:
Well we're planning on making the call on Wednesday. Right now we have enough snow for skate skiing, but not enough to groom a classic track. It's a pretty fast course right now.
      - Sadie Urban, race organization
  • Jan 8 Northern Illinois Nordic (Wheaton, IL)
    • Jan 5 update:
With no snow on the ground, the Northern Illinois Nordic 14K, 7K, and 4K kids race at Arrowhead Golf Club are postponed until Jan. 15. Thanks to King Keyser Ski Shop in Hinsdale and CXC, which will be in the store with Salomon reps Friday and Saturday for their "Superfit" program, an INDOOR version of the Northern Illinois Nordic will be staged on CXC's SKI-ERG machine. Skiers can stop in any time from noon to 8 Friday or 9-5 Saturday and go on the machine for three minutes. Results will be tabulated and posted. Prizes wil be awarded to the top finishers. For information on the postponed race.
      - Bob Richards, race director
  • Jan 9 Sawtooth Int'l (Grand Marais, MN)
    • Jan 4 update:
The race is on! We have very good conditions and will re-groom the race course Saturday night, of course. The current predicted high for race day, Sunday, is 18 degrees. There is a prediction for light snow on both Wednesday and Friday, so the course should freshen up.
      - Dick Swanson, race organization
