Illinois Rollerski Race Series Race Report

Chris Pappathopoulos, from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin was the overall winner today in first race of the 2014 Illinois Roller Ski Race Series. Chris' time for the 10k race was 25:16, which was 4:21 better then Tom Dvoratchek from South Elgin, IL, who finished in 2nd place, with a time of 30:55. Steve Clegg from Libertyville, IL finished in 3rd with a time of 31:16, and was 21 seconds behind Tom. Erica Mennerick, from South Elgin, IL was the top female finisher with a time of 51:18.

Chris led the race from start to finish, and he is off to another good start this year to earn the overall season champion award, which he won last year in 2013 when he earned 89.5 points out of a potential of 90.

Tom Dvoratchek appears to back stronger than ever this year, after breaking his shoulder in a bad mountain biking accident last fall (no pun intended, well maybe a small one).

Tom Clegg, who is a member of Wisconsin Biathlon raced his first time in the Illinois Roller Ski Race Series, and came in 3rd place after only roller skiing this week for the first time this year.

About
The Illinois Roller Ski Race Series consists of four 10k races where the top 30 male, female and junior racers in each race earn points towards the season champion awards.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards for the top finishing male, female and junior are hand out at a barbecue that follows each race. The food is great and everyone has a chance to share stories, and to go out on an optional pick up training roller ski.

The races are managed 100% by volunteers, and 100% of the net proceeds from the races are donated to support local cross country skiing, which include but not limited to Friends of Moraine Hills, Wisconsin Biathlon Association and the Wisconsin DNR.

• Sat. August 2nd (Family day and free lessons for beginners)
• Sun. September 7th (awards and BBQ at NORGE)
• Sun. October 5th
• Sun. November 2nd

The race series that is open to level of racers started in 2013 and was very well received by the racers; many of them commented that it helped them to focus and work harder on their summer training. All commented that they really loved the food and enjoyed getting together with old friends and meeting new ones.
