Skinnyski.com High School Rankings - Round 5

January 31, 2016

Commentary:

After hoping for some clarity coming out of the conference championships, we instead were presented with some of the most confounding results yet this season!   The top three girls were all upset in conference championships, and a number of top skiers were missing in action.  Some of it can be chalked up to waxing (hits and misses) in difficult classic conditions, some of it is illness, maybe even some fatigue from the recent JNQ series.   So we're given only a light review of the individual rankings this week, allowing for a "do over" with sections on the line this week.   Instead, we tried to give a better shake on the team rankings.

The Ely squads, both boys and especially girls, have been underranked most of the season, and after back to back wins over Duluth East, deserved a much higher ranking.  The Mora boys have also been dished a bit this season, and crack our top ten finally.  While not in the top ten, Champlin Park boys are another team we've neglected, and they enter the cusp list.   The girls team rankings are packed with some extremely talented clubs, and a large number of them are still in the running for a podium spot at State.  The boys team field is softer; there is a lot of flex there but most likely the State champion will come from the top five.

Note:  Don't put a lot of weight on the cusp lists... its generally a dumping ground of contenders, and while we try to sort it out some, we could easily toss those names in a hat and draw them out.  All good teams/skiers, just on the cusp of making that next big step.

Sections this week -- make us look foolish, skiers!   We'll take our final cut at the rankings the week after sections, right before the State Meet Preview.
