Afterhours Improvements
By Steve Petersen, Superintendent Brule River State Forest
October 10, 2002
The Brule River State Forest and the Brule Valley Ski Club
are pleased to debut nearly 9 km of new trail this winter
bringing the total trail system length to about 22.5 km. The
new trails are designed for both skate and classic skiing
and provide additional challenge, variety, and scenery to
the Afterhours Ski Trail system.
Club member and retired Forest Superintendent Jim Rau designed
the trails and supervised construction. DNR firefighting staff
Pete Witt, Steve Kangas, and Scott Follis performed the bulldozer
work to finish the new trails and make improvements to the
existing trails. The ski club also provided financial assistance
to build the trails.
The Afterhours Ski Trail is a mile west of Brule, Wisconsin
right on US2 and provides a warming house and pit toilets.
Forest staff are proud of their reputation for providing exceptional
grooming and you can usually count on lake effect snow to
give them something to work with.
There is a Master Plan for the Brule River State Forest
that is currently under review (under November 2002).
The Afterhours Ski Trail is under part of this plan. Some
of the proposed improvements include two footbridges to
cross the river and connect to the Ranger Station.
You can review the Master Plan and submit comments
