Weather Roller Coaster

by Mark Lahtinen
February 8, 2010

Although it is kind of a moot point now with the snow falling, we have been on a weather roller coaster since October.

October was the fourth coldest, fifth wettest and seventh snowiest on record which held promise for the impending winter snows. This was followed by the second warmest November on record which typically don’t lead to good snow years. This abruptly changed in December with the ninth snowiest December on record and it was a dense base type snow. The December snow was important as January had the tenth least snow on record and we survived on the December snow.

February has now started out above normal for snow.

A previous winter on record with a snowy December followed by a dry January was 1982-83 which was also during an El Nino year. February of that winter also started out snowy with about 7 inches of snow from 2/1/83 to 2/3/83. There was 14 inches of snow on the ground on 2/6/83. The temperatures then warmed dramatically with 15 consecutive days at freezing or above and 7 daily lows at freezing or above. The snow was gone by March First. There were mid-March and mid-April snows that year.

We need to get to about March 18 to get a 100 ski-day natural snow season this winter. Will we make it?
