Willow River Trail Prep

Ski trail brushing will resume Saturday, October 10th, 2015, on the Purple Trail. Work will run from 9am to noon most Saturdays until the deer hunt in late November. You are invited to join the work/fun. This is the second season of removing Buckthorn along the Purple Trail. All tools, even gloves, can be provided. Park admission for volunteers is free.

The goal is to open enough trail width to allow a 9’ skate deck and adequate room for classic track(s) without brush interference. Substantial progress has been made on part of the trail.

This is a volunteer led crew with a certified chain saw operator(s). We fell or lop the buckthorn, trim it shorter, load it in the truck, then deliver it to a burn site. Herbicide is applied to the stump to prevent re-growth. Volunteers will use loppers and bow saws with the occasional Pulaski or axe as needed. Those working in the drop zone will wear hard hats. This is physical labor harvesting brush with sharp thorns. Sorry, it is not a kid friendly job. Teens are welcome.

For more information and sign up, call the park office (715) 386-5931 from 8:30am till dark.
