New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

Trail Reports

2014-2015 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 39    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Friday, March 6, 2015
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Soft, slop, grass, rocks, cart paths.
Taking advantage of spring conditions on the little remaining snow, definitely for jaded addicts only. There is snow in the north facing shade along the two ridges; otherwise, it was a great time outdoors. In honor of my departed grandma Irene- it is time to turn out the lights.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: New snow and warmer temp from last night made it easy to move around. They groomed a path to get to the downhill section - nice to ski on.
I practiced with the Finn Sisu group last night. Snow was slow because of the cold but today it was good. You just have to see to move around on the trail - gets thin or icy in spots. Under the bridge is bare - be careful. Skied both sides of the bridge but not the back side/ eastern-most section. Was worth it!

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Like skiing on a lake with a dusting of snow on top.
I was one of two skaters lured to Como by the previous report today. Judging from the dearth of tracks, there was perhaps one other skater before us. We agreed that it was "skiable" but only with extreme caution and definitely not after dark. It was hard to get an edge on the uphills and on downhills we risked catching an edge on an ice ridge. I fell once. But the so-called glacier along the zoo side was excellent. I take personal responsibility for what looks like a high school team's worth of tracks on that side. Oh, and look out for golf balls. They are well camouflaged. Overall I was glad I went.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Windblown over ice pebble base.
Made two laps over formerly groomed area, definitely skiable with the only issue under the bridge where I moved and packed some snow to prevent the free structure I got on my first lap. Great day to get the 10-days-out-from-Birkie long ski in. No issue with cart paths as they are ice/snow cover and solid. Very fast downhill.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Still skiable, but very grassy.
I went out over the noon hour. It was a lot more grassy than last night--or was it because I could see the grass better? I think the former, because it was also a lot slower. Thinking that Como probably won't make it through warm weather.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Skiable, fair to good--finally.
What a relief to be able to ski close to home! The snow is thin, with grass coming through in many places--it seemed like grass clippings churned into the snow in some places. But overall the course is quite good, considering. I didn't hit pavement anywhere. There was even full coverage under the bridge, but be careful there as I did hit something that threw me. Although the snow felt silky where there wasn't grass, when I finished the bottoms of my skis looked like they had been completely stripped of wax.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair to good, ungrounded.
What a difference a dusting makes! Was an enjoyable skate ski. Almost all grass was covered again except for a few footprints from walkers. No grooming yet but the cats were on the alpine hill so maybe they will roll the trail when they are done with the alpine hill.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Fair to poor. The grooming today appeared on 20-30% of the trail to have exposed grass and dirt. The classic track is slightly worse than the skate trail with more exposed grass and a little exposed asphalt.
Como should be good - it is not. You can ski around the bad spots, but the trail is probably dangerous for night skiing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Groomed but windblown.
Not much of a change from yesterday. Grass sticking up throughout, but there are a few stretches with good coverage. Careful on the big hill on the NNW side east of the sliding hill. Saw a few spills there today on exposed grass and cart path. Definitely scraped up the skis a bit today, but it was a good time overall.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Groomed but windblown.
The trail has been groomed with new corduroy and classic tracks. But high winds already had blown drifts into track and scraped new snow off other areas. The drifts aren't so bad--they are hard enough to ski right over them. More problematic: the wind has blown off powdery new snow and exposed the same bare patches that existed before last snowfall. Beware of a number of spots with exposed grass and two patches of nasty bare blacktop on top of big hill near rope pull.
