Notes

Paved multi-purpose trail on former railway, similar to Munger, Heartland, and Paul Bunyan Trails. Runs from Carlton down to CR23 -- hooks into the Willard Munger Trail. (Submitted by Tom Urbanski) Pros: Perfect for a quick evening rollerski after a hard day's work. Currently much better pavement than Munger Trail between Carlton and Duluth. Far less foot, bike and roller traffic than Munger Trail, you can rollerski the entire length without having to dodge a steady stream of people. Good places to park include the Leimer Road crossing near Carlton, from where you can rollerski down and back a 2.58 mile (each way) stretch. Another good place is near the high school football field in Wrenshall where you can rollerski a different 3 mile stretch. Few road crossings, and some crossings intersect little-used roads that have hills suitable for doing repeats. Cons: The 6.5 mile trail is split into two main sections because of an old oil refinery that didn't grant right-of-way on their property. If you rollerski the full length of the trail, at about its midpoint you ski on a safe, wide shoulder of a moderately-used county highway for less than one mile. No marked parking lot/trailheads. Travels past working farms and through remote areas, so farm smells and bear sightings are not unusual. (Bear sightings make for interesting heart rate monitor readings.)
