A beautiful day of skiing at Black River Falls Forest. Blue skies and deep powder snow made for a great day of classic skiing. When I arrived at 11AM, I did Norway Pine, and Wildcat loops. These are very hilly but have fantastic vistas which was enhanced by snow draped pine trees. As I finished these loops the groomer started to groom them which should level them to near perfection. I then skied the North and Central loops which were freshly groomed and were in very good condition. Occasional pine needles and oak leaves were present.

Skied Central trail. Looks like it has all been freshly groomed. Trail was in excellent condition. Warming cabin had a nice fire going. Thanks to all the staff who make it a great place to ski.

Skied on freshly groomed trails by Smrekar warming shelter. South, Central, and North were all groomed and tracked nicely. Didn't make it to the Wildcat side, so can't report if all those trails are groomed. Still lots of deer on the trails and heavy snow load on trees along the trail.

The amount of snow in central WI this year has been staggering and BRSF is no exception. Keeping these trails open and groomed has probably been a great challenge. Joanie and I classic-skied freshly groomed trails Thursday morning, including the North, Central, South, and Red Oak loops. We also skated South Loop and part of Central Loop to top off our excellent day. Norway Pine and Wildcat were not groomed, so we did not ski on those trails. There were many critter tracks on parts of the trails, since this was the easiest way around the forest with the deep snowpack.

Just groomed with excellent conditions after 6 plus inches of new snow! All trails open... Bluebird skiy today with light winds. Skied Central and North Trails. Super fast. Hats off to crew for taking great care of this awesome Forest and with all its amenities!

Beautiful day at the forest. Leaving the Smekar lot the Central and North trails were nicely groomed and tracked. On the return from the shelter there was no track, but the trail had been packed. We also skied the Red Oak trail which again was packed but not tracked. There's a huge snow depth so hopefully all the trails will be in great shape next week. Thanks to the groomers' efforts.

Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
We were there around 9:30-11:30. We first stopped at Red Cedar and it was packed but not tracked so we left and went to the Central Trail. The Central Trail was packed and tracked for the first half but then just packed from the small shelter to the Smrekar parking lot. We had heard from others that the South trail was packed and tracked although we didn't ski that. Regardless, a beautiful trail. We appreciate the hard work that goes into maintaining the trails.

Observation
The trails in the Black River State Forest were not groomed. A tracked vehicle (probably the groomer) had driven over the trails so they were not skiable at all.

I classic skied the central and north loop. It appears everything has been groomed. The track was set but did not hold. Significant portions of the trail had little to no track that held. Additional there were sporadic areas with exposed ground through the track BUT we have snow.

Trails are in bad shape. 1-3" of loose fluffy snow ungroomed with sporadic bare spots. I skied South loop and half of Central before giving up and headed back to the chalet. I rode my fat bike along Central, North, and Red Oak trails: all are about in the same condition.
