2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 62    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Thursday, April 14, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: The parking lot was almost dry! The trails had some grass, some ice, some slush, and some snow!
Snowflake is for all purposes, "done" for the year. Huge thank you to both John's who groomed tirelessly until the last drop, and to both Dave's who filled in when needed! The 5k was about 40% connected with very few long patches. Special K was 80% connected at the start and finish of it and 50% in between. The 10k has the most snow, least use and may be good for another day or two of rock classic skiing. this may have been my last time skiing at Snowflake forever -- the "digger" is already parked at Snowflake as of today!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Groomed powder over icy base on the 5km with some bare spots. Groomed today.
Went to Snowflake to try one last ski. It was much better than expected and surprisingly good most of the way. There are about five spots requiring careful double poling through minimal snow and one melted-out downhill with just a tiny strip of snow on the edge. In a few places the thickness of the base is evident by narrow melted gaps across the trail left after March's rainstorm and the streams of running water. There is a lot of snow left on most of the loop!

Morning

[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Great for late season skiing.
5k is groomed for classic and skate overall very nice with a few icy and open spots. South downhills have thin snow cover.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Great late-season skiing.
Went around the freshly groomed 5K and Special K a couple of times beginning at dusk. With the exception of a few thin spots both the skate lane and classic track were in excellent condition. An enjoyable evening ski!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Groomed this afternoon - Slick.
We received 3 inches of fresh snow this week and it was enough to cover some of the bare spots. Great conditions for Spring Skiing.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Groomed and fast.
Such a wonderful ski this morning at Snowflake. I made it out before it warmed up and with the exceptions of 3 or 4 spots (where I had to avoid mud/ice), it was an incredibly beautiful ski. I was skating, but it looked like most of the classic tracks were doable. I think I might try to make it out tomorrow morning for another morning skate ski.

Grooming
[ B skis ]
Good Spring Skiing! 2" of new snowcover. The 5K and Special K were groomed last night and set up nicely. Some icy/bare spots on the south-facing hills, but very skiable. Come and enjoy it!

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Excellent spring skiing.
Arrived around sunset to ski and saw John briefly just after he finished grooming. 5K and Special K very nice and fast. 99% was debris-free, however I would not risk pristine skis. My daughter and I went around twice and had a blast.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good snow coverage; new snowfall ungroomed.
Winter wonderland after 1-2 inch wet snow early today. Used backcountry skis, and good firm trail, 100% coverage. Some skate skiers out earlier on the 5 K... slow; may be groomed later today. Still good skiing left at Snowflake! 5 K loop still being groomed. Thanks John.

Grooming
[ Bare ground ]
The 5K and Special K trails were groomed today for skating. Decent condition given the weather, but beware of icy patches or patches of exposed ground at the bottom of the bigger hills. The classic track remains intact on most of the trail. Rock skis recommended. The 10K trail is hard, bumpy and rutted, but there is still a decent man-made classic track, suitable for rock skis. All of the skiers coming in today were smiling!
