Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Old 32 parking lot at 1:45 pm. 37 degrees F and sunny. Last nights temp around 20 F. Went to nearly Smyth road and back. Used the shortcut on the way back. Surprisingly good again. Icy sections which made downhills "interesting" are mainly the first 1/2 Km out of the old 32 parking lot and also the first 1 km on the "Smyth side" of Sullivan Springs Road. Both of these are in the shade all day. All the rest is good but the area from about the 10 and 1/2 km down the hill going toward Sullivan Springs has an area about 10 feet long that is down to the grass (see picture). I was able to put on the brakes and ski through it but probably be a "skis off situation" from now on. Passed a skate skier (OK, maybe he passed me--its all semantics) who said skate skiing was also good. Back to old 32 lot at 4:15. 40 degrees F.

Still 99.99% coverage. Actually still could have used A skis as nothing that could not easily be stepped around. Waxless skis again the ticket for classic. Left old 32 parking lot at noon, 46 degrees F. Went to about the 13km marker and back. Packy to slushy conditions throughout except in areas always in the shade which were slightly icy -- these were few. The section that was the wettest with a couple areas of grass showing through on part of the trail was from around 10 and 1/2km to the 11km post just west of Sullivan Springs Rd. 55 degrees on return to parking lot at 2:30pm. Timing will be key to maximum enjoyment this week.

Surprisingly good conditions. Classic skied today. On the snow 10:00 42 degrees. Trail was just starting to soften up. Conditions improved the first two hours then leveled off. Last two hours were a little stick but the base was nice and firm. About 90% of the leaves in the track melted down an inch or two and had little effect on skiing. Five other skiers. Three of us classical and 3 skating. Off the snow 2:33 52 degrees.

Unbelievable conditions. Definitely worth the 90 mile drive from Appleton. Left Old 32 parking lot at 1pm. 39 Degrees F and moderate winds. Skiing classic on Waxless B skis with warm glide wax and some liquid wax on kick section. Nearly full depth tracks had been set and 100% coverage. Skate deck also impeccable with fresh combing and probably evidence of only 5 skaters since grooming. Went to nearly Smyth Road and turned around. On the way back, the previously variable tracks that had alternated between slightly glazed and a bit tacky were now nearly all tacky and slower but not slushy. Skate deck also transitioned to softer. 46 degrees F at 2:30 pm on our return to parking lot. Could have easily used A skis but waxless seems like the ticket, so if you have "A" waxless skis, those would be perfect. Thanks groomers! Put some money in the tip jar after skiing this gem.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Single track set all the way out to Smythe. The north end is just combed out as there was a slight warm-up. Had to comb everything on the way back to old 32. Best overall skiing will be behind the golf course.

On the snow 9:50 parking lot frozen. Off the snow 1:10 50 degrees. Track slowed as it warmed but stayed firm for my complete ski. Wish it was 5 degrees not 50. The grooming at Lakewood was fantastic.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Arrived at the old 32 parking lot at 9 AM. The skate deck was groomed the day before and set up nice overnight. The skate deck was firm and pole plants were rock solid. Skied the main trail north about 10k then returned to the trailhead. The wind caused a bit of debris to be blown on the trail after the grooming. The classic tracks were deep and I observed the occasional leaf in the tracks. As the temperatures warmed the glide was reduced and the snow started to warm in the sun. This was a great day to ski the Lakewood Trails. The groomer did a great job hopefully the trail base will survive the warm temperatures.

Got to old 32 lot about 11, trail had been groomed the night before with PB. It was icy fast with plenty of control, fun times for us over 200lbs. When we got to northern part of the trail it started to snow. They probobaly picked up 1inch of snow which really slowed things down. Great day of skiing. Skate deck and tracks are perfect. Thanks Lloyd for great grooming.

On the snow 10:50 18 degrees. Off the snow 3:35 23 degrees. Could hear the wind in the trees but, little made it down to the trail. Conditions were very good to excellent even though someone drove his snowmobile on part of the trail. Pics show the trail where the snowmobile traveled. Little damage.
