Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 28    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Friday, March 30, 2018
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails: Closed, Good skis ]
Ran (to be clear, on foot) the red loop and then took out the skate skis to do the 800 m man made loop. While no one would call this pristine skiing, the snow was deep and well corned. Zipped around a few times, got a good ski buzz on and called it good. Dirty snow but no rocks or sand. Used good skis.

[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Didn't want to call it quits just yet, so I took a chance on the snowmaking loop and the downhill runs. I had to hike in from the parking lot by the road and was rewarded with full coverage and great conditions. I got there just as the thaw started in the early afternoon both today and Friday. Some dirty snow, especially by the equipment storage shed but overall quite good for a one hour ski at the end of March in central Wisconsin.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The trail had been rolled probably Wednesday morning, so it was soft especially on the inner loops Wednesday afternoon. But there is complete coverage and it should be faster today. The outer loop has had the most rolling so it's in the best shape. No tracks have been set at all. The only problems are the water filled potholes. There are at least a half dozen of these and the ice will not hold your weight. In fact, I would skip the third inner loop since the potholes there are numerous, large, and deep. If you do decide to ski the third loop, bring a fishing pole.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Skied the man-made (700 meter) loop. Plenty of snow. Appeared to have been groomed yesterday. Classic track was present in most places (not across the downhill run). The P.B. groomer was parked outside the machine shed and the operator indicated a probable plan to groom tonight and to possibly continue grooming until March 15, as long as the snow lasts. The rest of the trails were more suited for ice skating based on the short trail from the parking lot on the road in to the lodge area (and man-made snow loop).

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
The trails were groomed today and are in good to fair condition. There are some thin and icy spots. The second half of Red Pine Run and the hills leading to Poplar Pass are icy and have little cover. Skiers should avoid these areas. No track was set due to the low snow conditions. The old track is icy and has some debris in it.

Skate conditions very good to excellent. Some stuff to watch out for, but freshly tilled and very nice. You could use good skis if you were careful.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The skate deck was in the best condition of the season. There are some thin spots and debris on the hills and in the pines so I would say B skis. Classic tracks were set but I noticed more debris in the tracks and several bare areas especially in Boulder Pass.

Afternoon

[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Very good conditions for classical. Three inner blue loops had very good minimal leaves in trail. A couple spots on the west side full of leaves but you can ski in skating lane.

Finally snowed 6" here last night. Got to trails by noon so the trails would be groomed. No stride tracks set except for easy green loop. Skating lane minimal groomed so narrow on blue loops hard to get up a lot of the hills. Groomer did not appear to be out while I was there.
