Spectacular conditions this morning on perfectly groomed trails. Joanie and I skied the 10.7 mile blue loop and 3.1 mile green loop. A great combination of single- and double-tracked trails. One of our favorites in WI.

Flew through the trails past piney woods on perfect new fluffy snow at 22 degrees. Tree boughs laden with fresh snow, and whisper quiet stillness echoed in my ears. As good as it gets. Trails were being dragged as I skied, and workers stated that trails would be laid today.

Trails were in fast and good condition. Blue Extra day. A little glazing late in the afternoon as a mist began to fall. The only thing that really kept me from rating them as excellent was the debris from the sub-zero temps and high winds of last week. Balsam tips seemed especially susceptible although there were oak and maple leaves mixed in. 90% of the trails skied fine and with hard wax the debris had little effect. That would change if softer wax or klister was used. Perhaps waxless is the way to go the next couple of days.

Objectively, poor conditions. No grooming, the few skied in tracks pretty much obliterated by walkers and mountain bikers. Subjectively, awesome. Retro skiing at its finest. Trails firm enough for touring skis. Base frozen and fast. Basically crust skiing in January. A few tiny sections of gray ice but no dirt. 10 miles south in town (Merrill), the city parks are skating rinks from the rain and most yards are brown. To find skiable snow that close seems almost a miracle.
