Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 25    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan
Tuesday, March 12, 2019
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Snow was somewhat soft but most areas were still snow covered. A few icy spots with puddles. A lot of the hills have large icy spots in the middle. Suprisingly still some crusty areas even at 45F degrees.

Arrived Wednesday morning to find fresh grooming. The groomer was able to lay nice corduroy on the transformed snow and it was very fast spring skiing! I skated the blue loop probably faster than I ever have. A few ice patches near the farmstead but easily negotiable. The downhills were safe. If you can find fault with conditions at McMiller today, then perhaps XC skiing is not your sport!

Skated blue at McMiller and conditions were mostly good with some fair spots. Still full coverage and no rocks, though a lot of stick debris on and in the snowpack/trail. The trail looked like it was groomed today, and with the exception of 5 or so ice spots, there was still great push-off! Icy spots are in all the normal areas - beginning, end, Stute Springs, etc. Very pleased this is holding up and likely the inner loops are in even better shape than the outer blue.

Trails were very crusty with an inch of fresh snow on top. Very fast. There was some debris in the classic track. Hopefully it can be groomed a bit before the next warm-ups.

I thought the conditions this morning were good. The tracks were old and not consistent. The new snow made everything good.

Really good! Evidence of the "rainy day skier" are all but gone. Grooming is outstanding considering what they have to work with. A blue loop requires only about 100 ft of double-poling on ice. Inner loops are even better. It's very fast right now and more technical skiers will have more fun!

Attempted to ski Tuesday afternoon and found conditions unacceptably poor. Trails where not closed during rain event and a skier had left deep trenches randomly on the trail. Disappointed trails were not closed during warm weather to preserve snow.

Not skiable today. Icy trails, does not appear to have been groomed since the rain. Lots of debris on the ice. I skied 2k and went home.

Observation
[ Trails Open: All ]
Stopped by this morning. Trail is slushy and not skiable but it seems the snow survived the rain. Cold temps may revive the track if the groomer can scratch it up!

Still full coverage here. Most of the trails were crusty and a little tough to get good push-off. There were several soft spots due to the warmth. Near Stute Springs, in the low-lying areas, it was very soft and saturated snow. Also very thin coverage there - I hope the trails survive the weekend. Still great coverage on the hills and the entire blue loop. No rocks poking through, just several sticks scattered. Today there were some hiker footprints from Stute Springs for about a mile on blue. Disappointing since they'll likely freeze in. Ugh.
