Notes

Brunet Island's trails pass through an otherwise undeveloped section of the park. The terrain is rolling with plenty of hills but none very large. Skiers pass through a mix of hardwood and evergreen forest, and ski a ridge within sight of the Fisher River.

Ski trails were great today. Glad I called to check because state park website said Brunet was no longer grooming.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We groomed all trails this afternoon and evening. The Nordic Trail turned out generally great, but wet snow and debris from the high winds yesterday contributed to some short sections of poor track. Overall it should be good skiing until temps climb. We worked on the 'candlelight loop'a little early, and the snow was harder to work. Much of that is also in very good shape, but there are more and longer stretches of shallow and inconsistent track.

Groomed to perfection yesterday as groomer hoped--conditions are finally excellent after the weekend snowfall. Two deep solid tracks on the two way, and one on the one way segments (no skating). Glide a little slow from the very cold snow, but should improve as it warms up.

Groomed all trails this afternoon; the Nordic trail looks to have come out spectacular. The candlelight loop has a few areas of shallow tracks under the hemlock trees, but is otherwise excellent as well. The park held their candlelight ski last Saturday night so the candlelight loop (on the Island starting from the log pavilion) is again open to multiple uses: skiers, snowshoers, hikers and pets are all welcome. (There is room alongside the set tracks for non skiers).

Interesting what a foot or so of snow can do for conditions. The Nordic Trail was groomed this afternoon. The new snow groomed up perfectly and the track looks excellent. Should be the best ski conditions in a couple seasons. The candlelight loop probably won't get groomed until Thursday. (Another park is borrowing our groomer tomorrow).

Morning
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Trails were all groomed Tuesday and yesterday. We were able to set a track for the first time, which turned out surprisingly good. The track is full depth and most of it is in excellent shape except for a few thin spots (which will surely open up a little more with the warm temps the next few days), and a little unevenness due to the thin snow cover. Still think 'B' skis are a good idea just to be safe, and be alert for the bare spots.

Grooming

Both the Nordic Trail and the candlelight ski loop were rolled today-the first work we've been able to do on them. There still isn't enough snow to set tracks, but they can be skied. Recommend 'B'or rock skis, and be alert for some debris if you go. The Nordic Trail can accomodate both classical skiing and snowshoeing. Pets are not allowed there, but they are allowed on the candlelight loop.

Although there has not been enough snow for machine grooming, the trail has been skier tracked and is in fair to good condition. That could change if predicted warmup comes. Somewhat surprisingly, woody and leafy debris was not a factor. I did use my A skis without problems. The shorter southern loop was cordoned off with yellow tape, although it appeared there had been some skiers on it.
