Trail Reports

2014-2015 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 103    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Tuesday, March 17, 2015
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Not worth it - slow and filthy!
There is plenty of snow depth on the manmade course. There are a handful of bare grass sections to step over. But the snow itself is so filthy and slow that it was an imnense accomplishment to complete one lap.

Grooming Scheduling
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Groomed this morning but dirty and icy!
Today was the last day for grooming. Conditions on the downhills and low areas pooled with water are becoming unsafe and icy. There are also several thin areas that are begining to show dirt. Thank you for all the great comments we received this season, the staff were grateful!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: 12"+ base but a surface more gray than white. Large area of dirt at bottom of tubing hill.
Dirty snow made for slow skating. Came back later with waxless and had great striding (there are shallow but usable tracks). The trick seems to be timing for the sweet spot between crusty from overnight freezing and slush from the heat - today that was early afternoon. Great to see my first robin of the season while out skiing in 53 degrees.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
I figured I would try one last ski at Wirth to verify that the ski season is in fact over. The snow is not really skiable anymore due to all the dirt, so I guess it is time to dig out the running shoes and rollerskis. Thanks to the grooming crew for making the best of this low-snow season!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Plenty of snow left but getting dirty.
I skied just before sunset. Most of the snowmaking course has excellent depth remaining. A few spots are quite dirty. Don't go through the lower stadium on your lap as the snow gets pretty filthy and slow behind the start line. The hairpin at the bottom of the tubing hill might need a reroute in a couple of days because of a section of tilled dirt. Otherwise, it's in good shape. You can put the kick wax in storage though. Klister, waxless, or skate from here on out. A week of decent skiing left I would guess, and then one more week after that for the diehards, masochists, and rock ski connoisseurs.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Manmade loop perfect for skating. Nice and smooth. They tracked the stadium otherwise one classic track through the rest. I ventured to the back 40 but quickly turned around after seeing a lot of very thin spots which will be exposed quickly.
When I finished at 10 AM it was warming up dramatically. Should be some great spring skiing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Skated the Bog, Butler, JD Gardens, Tornado Alley and the front nine. The Bog was outstanding (almost could have used good skis). Butler was decent except for the big south-facing downhill just before turning left across the swampy area. Take care because there is a 10 foot dirt gap on the hill and it's hard to stop in time. (I couldn't despite dragging my butt as an anchor). The rest of Butler was fine. JD Gardens and the front nine were ok with some very thin patches and Tornado Alley is full of rocks offering a nice coarse free stone grinding so your skis will be ready for the 50 degree days.
Thanks to the groomers for continuing to get out and pack the trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Surprisingly decent in Eloise Butler and Bog areas.
Classic skied this morning in south Wirth. Trail was groomed and mostly nice, but rather uneven and bumpy in places. No classic track set, but the snow was soft enough that it was fine without a track - and no matter: it was great just to get off of the snow-making loop, especially on such a beautiful day!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Very good on snowmaking loop.
Excellent would be evaluating too. I saw skate and classic skiers out today, and everyone looked like they're having a great time. I did the snowmaking loop twice and it was a bit sugary, but it wasn't fast to the point of being dangerous. Thought it was a very good day for skiing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Perfect classic tracks on Man made loop. Skate ski racers looked like they were having a good time.
Skied midday. Also tried the Judy loop a couple times but wouldn't recommend it. The groomed areas were a mix of ice and bare spots but there was some good snow on the borders.
