Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Skied mid-day today in 35F degree temps. Excellent coverage on a firm skate deck and classic track! Classic only trails also looked pristine with no dirt in the tracks. Conditions a little slow despite some added structure in the ski base. Beautiful forest, great grooming and 40km of trails — totally worth the drive from Hayward.

Thanks to the polar vortex this week, the south shore Lake Superior snow machine was turned on and I had my first good ski of the year on natural snow. There were very few twigs sticking up out of the snow, and for the most part, the classic trails were excellent. I skied the Sugarbush loop going past the historic sugar shack and had excellent grip and glide on Swix VR 40. This is a really good nordic trail system and if you have never skied Mt Ashawabay you may want to check these trails out.

The skiing was fantastic this morning! Most of the trails were freshly groomed and tracked - the only segment that hadn't been done was Northern Lights from the Seagull intersection ("The Summit") to the ski lift/down Buzz. The skate deck is firm in most places and the tracks looked great. The coverage is very very good - I skied on my best skis but there were a few little stems poking up and one thinner spot, if you are picky. It looked like winter out there, finally!

Another great day of grooming: All classic is done except the sea gull connector and the lower sugar bush connector. Jolly system was rolled packed and tracked. The Skate/Classic Combo trails are all groomed and tracked. We now have 40k of groomed and tracked trails! Birkie training can be done here.

The trail conditions have improved so much since a week ago! The trails are flat, the tracks no longer have debris, and a little new snow each day has made all the difference. We skied to the Sugarbush Cabin and the Anchor loop, and it was all great. Its probably fine to use good skis now, but I can't say for sure because it was dark and lightly snowing. The skate deck is a little soft because it's been so cold.

Classic skied about 18 km this morning. There was a little bit of fine cold new snow overnight. The groomers were out laying corduroy, and setting tracks as I skied. Skied new tracks the entire time. Snow is still a bit soft, firming up a bit though. Kick was great, glide was a tad slow due to the cold new snow. Twigs, gravel/sand and grass still poking through the base on sections. Overall a great cold ski! I just love the hill climb options here. Thank you groomers, keep up the awesome work and I'll start amping up my Birkie training. See you on the trails.
