Notes

Located 18 miles north of Duluth, the groomed trails are in nice primitive outdoor setting. The trails feature the "Wolfski's Ski Den" warming shack, open daily sunrise to sunset. In addition to the 21 kilometers of classical skiing, there will also be 11 kilometers groomed for skate-skiing. Trails are groomed Fridays and Mondays, and/or as needed. No fee or Minnesota State Ski Pass is required.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle

32F. Overcast, calm. I skied all the trails, including double poling around the Grouse. Very uneven and undulating, good for practicing balance, body position. Everything is in really good shape (say it all together now) for the amount of snow we have. No problem using good skis.

32F. Overcast, foggy, misty. The trail was in really good condition, easy to ski around the grass. The tracks looked great. The snow is so soft and wet. I skied from the first parking lot all three loops. Great practice for balance as the surface is very undulating.

Had a nice classic ski at 25 degrees around Blue Ox. A little brush/weeds and a small dirt patch or two. A little dog poop (grrrr whoof!). Nice night for a ski.

Skied Blue Ox and Bearpaw from 2-3 and the classic tracks were fine--just a little grass in a couple of places. Dog days tomorrow--looking forward to seeing them and taking on Nine Pine!

Beautiful winter wonderland at Boulder lake trail today. The East Parking lot is finally open. The trail was groomed for classic and skating. Still lot of grass sticking up due to low snow depth. The skating trail looked nice and in better shape than the classic (less grass). Only 1 or 2 skaters had been there. 10K in frigid cold (-18 C, 0 F).

Skijored from Wolfski Den to Blue Ox and Bear Paw in late afternoon. Trails are soft and slow, with stubble poking up through the snow in places. No tracks or skate deck. Still, there's enough snow for a good trek through the woods.

It was beautiful at Boulder lake as always. The snow depth was about 5 inches (ungroomed parts). The groomers had packed the snow but not leveled and no tracks for classic or skating. The snow was crisp, cold and sticky. Decent condition for backcountry skis. Not suited for skating or fast classic. Also decent conditions for fat biking. Did 10K and went home and watched the scenes from the ice planet of Hoth from Star Wars Empire Strikes!

We drove to Boulder at noon today hoping to break trail. Neither lot was plowed so unfortunately had to head back home.
