American Birkebeiner Coverage
February 23, 2019
A fresh inch of snow and temps near freezing made for some slow glide in the 2019 American Birkebeiner races. The mens skate race came down to an exclusive three skier trio as Matt Liebsch, Brian Gregg, and Akeo Maifeld-Carucci skied together across Lake Hayward and took it down to a sprint on Main Street, Maifeld-Carucci bettering Gregg by a foot, with Liebsch (still suffering from car accident on Wednesday) trailing in for third. Former Korte champ Alayna Sonnesyn collected her first Birkie win, pressing the pace on the final hills to gain some separation and soloing in for the victory. Anja Gruber was second, Katie Feldman third. The classic champions were Peter Holmes and Cate Brams. Results linked in and nearly 1000 photos from the early waves.
