With a turnout of 40 boats the 2002 edition of the Hoigaard's Canoe Derby got off to a great start on Thursday 5/30. In the mens racing class Birke elite wave skier Al Limberg and his partner John Hugus set a speed record driving from Wausau Wisconsin to the Derby and continued that speed on the water winning the class in 63:41, over a minute ahead of 2nd place. Jason and Stephanie Larson won the mixed racing class in 67:08. Dave and Josie Nelson took second in the mixed racing class with a time of 69:42. In the 18 mens derby class Corey Brinkema and Gene Kay just missed breaking 1 hour, winning the class in 60:30.
