Mora Adds First Chance Race

Skiers’ have an early-season racing opportunity this year because the Vasaloppet folks in Mora are planning the “First Chance Race & Expo January 5. The race will feature a 15km and 5km distances at the Vasaloppet Nordic Center. Expo will feature Gear West, Pioneer Midwest, Finn Sisu and Fast Wax.

The Vasaloppet “Snow Farmers” volunteers will be firing up snowmaking equipment and can begin hauling snow onto ski trails once the ground is sufficiently frozen. The conservative plan is to have at least a 5km loop of manufactured snow. A very cold December, along some natural snowfall could allow for a longer loop.  Vasaloppet Board member, Don Olson, who helps lead the snowmaking effort, stressed the goal is on building a quality trail rather than just trying to go for distance.

The January 5 First Chance Race & Expo will followed by the Lanternloppet January 26, the Moraloppet race on February 2, the Vasaloppet USA race February 9-10 and the Last Chance Race in March.
