Battle Creek Winter Recreation Area Update

Winter Recreation Enthusiasts

As some of you have already heard, a bonding bill was passed by the Minnesota House and Senate yesterday, which included a $1.8 million appropriation for the Battle Creek Winter Recreation Area. This is tremendous news and many of you have worked for over a decade planning, advocating, calling legislators, showing up to meetings, and bringing your passion, energy and vision to this project. That support was critical to getting where we are today, and huge congratulations are in order to all of you for that effort.

While this is a huge win, and a great reason to celebrate, there remains much work still to be done and questions to answer. The original bonding ask from the county was $3.2 million, so there still remains a funding gap to fill during a challenging time in this global pandemic.

So, while there is still work to be done, everyone should take a moment to celebrate this milestone and bask in the achievement. The vision of opening up winter recreation opportunities – from sledding, to ski lessons, to world-class competitions – to new and diverse audiences, both in the immediately surrounding community as well as the state, is now closer than ever.

Thank you for your work and we’ll keep you engaged throughout the process. Your talents and expertise will be needed in the coming months and years more than ever.
