Notes

The Balsam Branch trails are open to the public for no charge. When there is snow, tracks are set by Polk County Park and volunteers. The trailhead parking area is always well plowed. Toilet facilities are available at the nearby Kennedy Environmental center but no coffee shop or warming facility. Roughly 4K of lighted trails added in 2010.

Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 21    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The base is still there but getting soft and the tracks are now icy in most places. Some leaves and pine needles too, but mostly free of debris but probably best to use waxless skis now. With rising temps and it not dropping below freezing at night the season is almost over here. A big thanks to those who groom, track, and otherwise maintain this wonderful trail! I'll be sending a contribution your way soon.

Still a firm base with no pools of melt water anywhere yet, inner loop in decent condition with some foot prints in places but nothing I couldn't go over easily. Some ice in open areas but tracks in woods is o.k. Nice to get out for a few more days, hopefully.

[ B skis ]
Skied the inner B loop at noon. Icy. People have walked on trail and someone skied classic down the middle of the skate deck. Twigs and leaves on the trail.

Whew, what a reminder of how important our groomers are! I wish they'd been out there, but I'm grateful to the very strong and determined skier who made the tracks I could ski in -- much better than not skiing at all!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Four to five inches of new snow fell on Saturday, so no grooming done yet but the classical skiing conditions were good with no ice on any of the trails. Parking lot and drive were not plowed but it was possible to get in to park at the trail head. Have fun while it lasts!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Snow is packed and both classic track and skate ski deck were in good condition, with just a few icy patches in the wooded areas. With more snow falling Saturday night it should still be decent skiing.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Packed and groomed skate lane and classic track. Get out and enjoy before we get more snow. Enjoy the snow shoe trails also.

Skated the outside (unlit) loop with headlamp. Skate lane had been skied in quite a bit which made for fairly solid skating without slabs of snow breaking off underneath you like earlier in the week after the fresh snow. Race baskets were still punching through quite a bit while poling, especially on the sides of the trail that hadn't been skied on much. All in all, excellent conditions.

Tracks were in great condition a little rough around some turns but all in all fantastic skiing. I skied the lighted trail section the tracks were fast and the skate looked to be in good condition.
