New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

A few portages, and some bare spots to ski around under the evergreens. But many Ks of good spring skiing remain.

Amazing day! Tshirt and zeros on wet snow. We still have 6 to 12 inches on most trails, likely awhile yet for dedicated skiers! I went up Deer Path and the Buzz to Northern Lights, Black Bear, Seagull and Seagull classic, Anchor. It was all great, could have used good skis. The base is still good on the northern side. The steep hill in Jolly has melted, you'll need to walk that section.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Friday morning we groomed the Skate lanes on Abbey Road, Northern Lights, Seagull, Switch Back, and Anchor back to the trailhead (about 10K). There are no classic tracks, if it is possible to set tracks we will update this report tonight. Conditions are good springtime skiing with 1-2 inches new and a 6-12 inch base, no thin spots on the trails we groomed today but there are a few spots where the Gator tracks broke through the surface which didn’t get covered up very well. As always in the springtime timing is critical for the best experience.

Unexpectedly beautiful conditions on the skate deck today. Skied anchor to cabin, northern lights to summit (northern lights to Buzz not groomed), down Seagull to start. Plenty of snow. Only a couple of short sections where it was hard to avoid debris on trail and could use good skis if you don't mind those.

Spent a wonderful afternoon skiing the trails in Bayfield. Still a decent amount of base for the most part. To start the snow was great with plenty of kick and glide. Then as the afternoon wore on, the 45F temps started to turn the snow to mush. Then things slowed down considerably. Still a fantastic afternoon. I'd say get out there early and you'll be fine. Should be good for a few more days at least.

Mt. Ashwabay trails are in great condition! Enough base to last quite a while. Note the yurt photo, the second placed here by Bayfield County, rented through Airbnb. Priceless view of the Apostle Islands.

Figured this morning might be the last chance for a stellar classic xc ski. Skied from about 9:45 to 12:30 again. The conditions were perfect for spring skiing, the weather was tropical, the scenery was second to none, and the groomer was waving to me at the start! 42 km just happen and it felt like 30 km. At 9:45 the tracks were slightly glazed, hard and fast with enough kick to get up all hills. Throughout the hours the tracks softened up, kick increased, and glide continued to be great! By noon it was getting soft, but still holding up well. Hopefully, this isn't the end of the season.... But, if it is my Brooks are ready to run and my Giant is ready to ride. Ski on.

Early Sunday morning the the skate lanes on Anchor, Roller Coaster, Abbey Road, Northern Lights, and Buzz were combed. Excellent Spring Skating conditions with a 6-12 inch base. The classic tracks are variable in and out of the sunny spots.

Went skiing today expecting okay spring conditions and I was pleasantly surprised! Classic skied 42 km from 9:45 am to 12:30 and the conditions were excellent! It was the kind of ski were the weather is unreal, glide was awesome, kick was solid enough and I developed a perma-smile from the feeling. The groomers have been keeping up with the conditions great! By noon the snow was a little soft, especially on the Buzz/ south facing side of the trails. I look forward to taking advantage of the weather and another morning ski tomorrow if the temps are right!! Ski on.

Friday Night new classic tracks were set on Sugarbush, Seagull Classic, Oppedahl's and the lower Sugarbush’s. Abbey Road, Northern Lights, and Buzz were groomed for Skate and new Classic tracks were set. Saturday should be excellent spring skiing conditions with a 6-12 inch base. Enjoy the skiing!
