Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Skied the Tony Wise trails out from the Birkie trailhead. Trails in the woods are about 80% snow covered. Expect bare sections. Melting new snow is very slow. Amazing to still get out in the Northwoods. We didn’t see anyone on the trails but there were skier and bear (we think) tracks from yesterday.

We put on at the Birkie Ridge and then skied the skate trail to Fire tower, then we crossed over to the Classic and skied that to Timber trail and then we skied the Skate back to Birkie Ridge. Trails were outstanding. We started at about 30 degrees and had fast crust and good control. There is a mandatory portage on the Classic trail about a mile south of Timber trail - it's near the bottom of a very long hill so scout things carefully. There is still 6" of base on most of the trail and for a few hours every morning it is skiing very well.

Skied south from OO Monday morning before it got warm. At that time conditions were good. One spot at about the 26 k mark had a large puddle across the trail and the clear cut just south of the 25 k had only a light dusting of snow. These parts require a walk around but rest of the trail was good. Time to start heading for our secret spots that hold snow longer. It's been a good year!

Skied from the North End to the high point. The trail was pretty soft but reasonably clean. About a km south of the HP some bare ground is starting to show, otherwise the coverage was excellent.

This afternoon I skied classic technique from OO to Boedecker and back. I went north on the classic trail and south on the skate trail. In that section the trail is 99% covered with snow, in many places still deep snow. The couple of bare spots that were on that section did not cover the whole width of the trail, so all downhills were safe. The snow was soft corn snow, great for fish scales. The tracks have mostly melted on the classic trail, but on the skate trail they are still usable.

Skied from cabin to Mosquito Brook to Becker Law Link (Hwy 77) and back. Good coverage still, only had to dirt portage twice. Must have nailed timing window of ski opportunity, nice control. Still firm base. No natural debris. A few icy spots. Forgot how much fun skate skiing is! Looks like a pair of sorel boots was walking their pet grizzly but very avoidable. Only 1 week to early Birkie sign up!

Skied the start Area trails and the Classic trail to past the power line. Good coverage, about 2 inches of new ungroomed snow. Easy skiing, with no grooming the trail will get rougher. Enjoy it has been a great year!

Great from OO. Mosquito, Fish hatchery were both bare to ground. Enjoy and keep yourself and others safe!

Wow! What a treat to ski any section of the Birkie Trail today. 2" of medium density lake effect snow ending at 10:00 am, deep base, bluebird skies, temps in the mid 20s, mostly 2 hours of untracked trail. Perfect conditions and no grooming necessary (no offense Kurt- you guys did a great job all year). Very few people out today. Saw a few tracks but no people. No issues with distancing. Ski time! Be safe.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
For a variety of reasons, we have made the decision to end all grooming activity on the Birkie Trail for the season. Mother Nature is doing a fantastic job of providing great spring skiing conditions and the Birkie Trail is still open at this time. We hope you are able to enjoy late-season skiing (while being mindful of social distancing practices) on the trail while it lasts. Thank you for a great season!
