Trail Reports

2021-2022 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 35    Month: Apr | Mar | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
The early bird skiing this morning was on glide-y granular not-newly-tracked but not slushy (but yeah the snow-finally-got-dirty) trails. Cedar and Birch loops still fun with cleaner snow. Powderhouse too, on cleaner snow, with the only 3' wide gap in the snow, where we tip-toed over the grass. Glad to be able to report that it was nice skiing this morning, since we wanted our probably last ski of the season to be fun. We had a nice 1:20 and enjoyed what's left of the snow at Swedetown.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
We arrived at 9:45 am and found a lot of other skiers! Even though the bear loops are not being groomed, we found super nice skaing there, including some zooominess, on top of the firmed up new snow. Coming out of the bears, it started to get softish but not much really going into the 11th hour, and we headed to the groomed (dragged) trails including super fun skiing on Ed's loop, where conditions carried us up and down the hills fast. No bare spots by any means and pretty clean snow all over. A very sunny day, so xc skiing at Swedetown can still be enjoyed even if you don't get out early in the morning; it will just be slower going in the sun.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Groomed most trails overnight. Tracks are set and skate lane dragged. Good conditions especially in the morning. Enjoy these final days of snowy trails! Bear Loops and Powderhouse are no longer being groomed.

Great morning skiing at Swedetown. Tract was set and the skate lanes groomed. There was a good showing of skiers both skating and striding, every one was talkative and loving the conditions. Very well could be skiing here into May on good snow.

Super zoomy and fun spring skiing on the Swedetown trails this morning! The best trail was Ed's, with enough purchase to skate nicely, and super fun with effortless uphills and the rest just giddy fun for those who balance well on their skis. Enough purchase on the top of the snow for not-so-expert skiers to be able to enjoy this loop, as well today. The Bears trails were next best regarding grooming, but just a fun and not any slush or slow snow at all, even though not newly tracked and with some skate grooves probably from yesterday afternoon's skiers. But, pay a little attention to where you place your skis and you can zoom along and enjoy the wonderful glide. Skiing on the side meadows was wonderful too. The Valley trail was more skittery due to yesterday morning's tracking and traffic, but don't let it deter you because there's only a couple K of that, and there is a lot of fun to be had out there at Swedetown today!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Even though the Swedetown groomer reported that they stopped grooming at 7 a. m. due to soft conditions, and therefore only a few K were newly groomed today, we had an enjoyable ski on firm enough and not at all slushy deck. We we enjoyed skiing several trails on both the newly groomed and previously groomed track. Firm enough with some softness on top, but no sinking in, and yes it was slow snow, but enjoyable with good coverage and yes it was worth the drive to ski here today. BTW we saw a salamander making his way along the Greenstone trail, so watch out for the little guys! There were still classic tracks to ski in, but not newly set today and we were skating. Someone had skied in a few of the classic tracks though, so if you had the right wax then it beats skiing with no tracks eh!

Still great skiing and daily grooming at Swedetown! By each afternoon, it gets stickier, but both skating and classic remain good, if soft.

Fantastic Easter ski! Husky-groomed last night, perfect skate deck and tracks this morning! Several inches of fresh snow during the week, so we have perfect mid-winter conditions now.

Another 2-3" of fresh snow again brought the Husky out of the barn to till the whole trail system. Skate deck can best be described as velvet! Smooth, fast, yet easy to get a good edge. Tracks were good too, although the high winds were blowing in sort sections on occasion. Still have a 24"+ base. Amazingly good skiing for mid-April!

Fresh 4" of snow in Calumet brought out the big groomer and some excellent Mid-April skiing. Tracks were good - mixture of fresh snow and ice underneath resulted in both good kick and good glide. We still have 2 feet of solid base. Will be a late start to the mountain bike and hiking season!
