Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 41    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Had a decent ski, trails are firm with a tacky, slow top layer, at 2pm with the warmer air. A few crusty/icy areas, but not as bad as it could be with all the ice the last couple weeks. I skied blue loop, and downhills were ok, nothing too crazy. Lots of debris when in the area of pine trees.

[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Tracks not as good as they were yesterday, but we still had a great time. A little more exposed ice in a few places and a little more debris in tracks than yesterday, but mainly quite good. When I jumped out of the tracks to go downhill, it was pretty slow...but good glide in tracks. Still, it beats doing my spin bike inside!

We had much more fun than we anticipated! Classic tracks good; only a few places are icy and very little debris in the tracks. We skied the white trails twice! A great day and worth the 1.5 hr drive from Mundelein, IL for us!

Trail debris, and icy conditions stripped grip wax. Skating conditions looked very good though. Much respect
to the groomers, the downhills were smooth, and fast, and easily negotiable by folks that are generally comfortable in the downhills.

The trails were fair. I was happy I went out and skied and would go back. I skied blue and found the sections of it that overlapped with green and the very hilly part were best and had enough snow cover to get decent push off (though were crusty). Some areas in heavy pines, especially on white, didn't have enough loose snow cover and had ice patches you had to glide over. Debris in the pine sections. I didn't find the hills too icy on up or down and was pleased I skated the ungroomed hilly blue section, as the inch of loose snow on top made it good.

Observation
[ Trails Open: Most ]
We were led astray by someone's excellent rating. A bit of snow on rock hard ice rates a poor on my scale. It could be skied, but why? We left.

Did White and Purple. 85% of trail was OK for skating and it was easy to pole through the icy areas. Other skiers avoided the Blue, Red, Orange trail for fear of the icy conditions on the steep downhills. More snow will make much better.

Skated this afternoon. Excellent conditions at Nordic. The groomer had done the entire system while I was there. A few ice patches here are there and also pine cone debree. Both are easily navigable. The grooming at the S. Kettle ski areas has been excellent this year.

I arrived just after 2:00 and started on the blue. Conditions were excellent and I was pleasantly surprised. Good coverage and pretty fast track. Exposed areas were still firm with nice glide. A bit of debris in the pines which is normal. The last blue connector just after Mile 5.5 was still ungroomed. That section has rutted downhills and a narrow track. On my second blue loop I skipped that section and finished on the green. A bit softer in some spots later afternoon but still crusty and fast in the shaded areas.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails were groomed overnight with the exception of the Blue joiner (icy). The Nordic system is in very good to excellent condition throughout. Yesterdays mix of snow and sleety rain doesn't appear to have deteriorated conditions but our base is getting thin in areas.
