Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

Was sure a surprise to hear that the Lester trails were groomed on Friday so had to go check it out today. The trails are going down fast, but was still able to enjoy the great sun and warmth and get a good workout. I am not picky and just love being out there. Some bare spots, debris, and slush along the way, skied up to H and back. Still some good kick in the tracks though. Might be the end soon so if you can get out, go for it. And thank you thank you for grooming the trail!

Many thanks to the groomer! Beautiful ski around noon today on a groomed trail with excellent classic tracks. A few caveats. Some of the side loops aren't groomed and too rough to ski especially the I-loop where there's a downed tree. Also, beware of flowing water at the bottom of the K-hill. Only a few open spots on the upper trail but you'll notice a fair amount of small twigs in the tracks from the recent storm — these weren't a problem really. Tracks in the bottom loop from A to B have numerous open spots due to thin cover and sunshine. Still, easy enough to step out. High sun, lovely day. A gift.

Night
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Although the afternoon rains washed the base down to ice, the evening's ~3 inches of fresh, wet snow made all trails skiable. There were a few puddles to skim, but my feet stayed mostly dry. Never made it down to rock or dirt. We should be looking at least a couple fun days of freeze/thaw skiing!

Third and final Tour DuLuth stop today at about 2 p.m and 38F. 99.9% good coverage with a few avoidable thin or bare spots. Definitely had fairly heavy use. Slushy in places with southern exposure. Conditions better the higher up you go. Nice Spring ski to end the day.

Greatly surpassed my low expectations. I used the rockiest of my rock skis in anticipation of a lot of gravel, but the skate deck coverage was surprisingly good, no bare spots that weren't easily avoidable, would have been fine in B skis. Obviously slushy in the sun and icy in the shade but if you get out late Friday or early Sunday I think you won't regret it. Warning: Don't take the big hill on the J-loop of the north hill back down to the chalet. You will definitely regret that - bare ground on both hills. I parked off Seven Bridges so can't comment on the trails down to the lower main parking lot either but I would assume they are in rough shape.

Had a great skate ski despite warming temps. A little slushy but surprisingly fast conditions at Lester today! Some bare spot the sun had melted the track and mud was showing through, but overall kudos to the groomers!

Great conditions for skating early this morning. I did not ski the lower area below marker A. The climb on the J loop had a lot of bare area, and downhill on the L loop was getting thin. The N loop was closed. Everything else was primo - fast, hardpacked but not icy. Well worth the visit!

[ Good skis ]
Skied Lester trails, green and blue today starting around noon. I had not skied these trails in several years and I used my waxless skis. The trail from the Lester River parking area was bare at the start but once up the hill the trails were great. We got there just after they were freshly groomed. Classic tracks set nicely and fresh corduroy for the skaters. Great day and I will be back.

Trail not set but previous classic track in mostly excellent shape thanks to skiers. A few slick patches here and there. Nice to have my wax working again after the fresh snowfall. Got some kick!

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skate deck was icy when we got there around 5pm (to be expected after 40 degrees and sun) but relatively smooth with no big ruts. I would avoid the southern-most loop below Marker A- lots of bare patches and rocks down there. Otherwise conditions fine for B skis with some debris and dirt patches that can be avoided.
