Magney has been refreshed with the four inches of fresh stuff! We used our good zeros and skins to classic ski in a track.

Only one portage early this afternoon, at the Elys peak snowmobile trail crossinng, although that may have changed since I skied. A handful of South/East facing downhills are getting burned out, including some blind ones- check your speed when cresting. Otherwise solid coverage and pleasant skiing on freshly groomed snow with just enough give.

The groomer is at Magney. I don't know what the trail is like, but the groomer is there.

Magney so nice, we did it twice! Really nice conditions, fresh corduroy yesterday and hadn't seen too much traffic. Crusty and super fast when it was still cold this morning, thrilling! The second loop things started slowing down just a little bit in the warm sun, but still pretty great.

Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Good skis ]
Groomed yesterday, according to the city hotline, and in good shape when we headed out around 1:00 today. The tracks are a bit shallow here and there and there is the usual sprinkling of oak leaves and those little fleur-de-lis-shaped seeds. I skated a bit on my fish-scale classic skis and the skate conditions seemed really good. Fast, but not icy.

Wow. Sheer perfection today at Magney. Fresh cord, high 20's with pure sun, and a ski from the future! We will be skiing for a while yet. Hopefully more days like this to come.

Skied Magney both days this past weekend. The light half inch of snow on top of a well packed icy crust made for very pleasant skating on Sunday compared to too-fast icy trails on Saturday. All trails are well packed and there is only a little tree debris here and there that is easily avoidable. Overall prime spring conditions at Magney. Classic tracks were solid and firm when we would get in them on the downhills.

I've wanted to ski M-S for years. So the March 1st report of new grooming and a perfect sunny day compelled me to stop here on the way up the Nor' Shore! Wow, great conditions and a beautiful trail system made for a very fun skate ski around the whole loop. And then I switched and did a classic ski! Very highly recommended, especially with these conditions!

Magney was regroomed yesterday and the trails were perfect. The temp was 32 and I had good grip and glide with swix VR55. Because of the hilly nature of the course Magney is a trail that requires regular grooming but if you can catch it after it has just been groomed skiing doesn't get any better then this.

My first mistake was driving past the sign for upper Spirit Mountain Nordic Center on my way to Magney for skate skiing. My second mistake was telling myself that conditions surely would improve once I was off the Bardon Peak Loop. Skied the entire system, finding conditions very soft for skating. The out-and-back initial segment from the parking lot to the loop part of Magney-Snively was a little soft on the right half of the skate lane nearer the classic track, but certainly firm enough for a decent ski. The skate deck softened greatly, particularly again on the right half of the deck, on the loop. Snow on the skate deck currently does not support skier weight, let alone allow for push-off. Even in the classic track, when cornering a downhill, if you try to push off around a corner, there is nothing solid enough to push against to change trajectory. The most ski-able part of the loop was the short portion on the road that is also snowmobile trail. Just to see if I had missed anything, I skied the connector over to Spirit Mountain, which is where I discovered a wonderfully hard skate deck (and nice classic track)! Additionally, Magney trail was narrow for skating in some spots, particularly uphills.
