Notes

Mcnaughton Lake Trail follows old logging roads around three lakes and has very few steep hills. It is very scenic and an excellent trail for a beginner. A five and a half mile loop is groomed for skating. There is a shelter with a fire ring on the trail.

Tuesday, March 26, 2019
Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Spring crust skiing at its best. Temperature was 36F at 10 am beautiful blue sky. Snow was just softening up for some great spring skiing. The trails are not being groomed anymore. As with spring skiing, timing is everything.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Trails have not been groomed since Monday. Classic loops still have track. Lots of debris and ice. Light snow this morning will help cover the ice but use caution. Poor conditions overall.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Trail conditions were decimated with the recent warm temps and rain. Lots of debris working its way to the top as the snow melts. Last grooming was Monday. Unless we get more snow, grooming operations will no longer continue. Conditions are very poor.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The weekend winds left a large amount of debris in the trail. Even with the fresh few inches of snow, it didn't cover the debris. Tracks and deck are firm but will change as temperatures fluctuate. The skater's loop is in good condition. Still only open to the warming shelter. Overall good conditions.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
As the groomer reported, the red loop was not groomed past the shelter. I decided to break trail with my classic skis anyway. That was quite a workout and it took me several hours. The drifts at the end of the lake were quite deep. The results of earlier grooming were barely visible. The classic trail from the shelter to the parking lot was heavily littered with forest debris which made conditions on that segment very poor. I do not know whether the rest of the blue, green, and yellow trails also had forest debris but I suspect they may have.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Trails were groomed early this morning with the fresh couple inches of snow. Deck and tracks on classic loops are just a little on the soft side but these cold temps should firm them up in no time. The skaters loop is only groomed out to the warming shelter. As it stands, the loop around the lake will remain closed unless conditions improve where the drifts settle down. Very little debris. Overall the trails are in great condition.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Trails were groomed this morning after the fresh few inches of snow. The classic loops are in great condition with very little debris. The skater's loop is in good condition. The deck is a little soft but should firm up over night to make for great conditions. The skater's loop is only open out to the warming shelter. There are a few low hanging branches to watch out for but nothing major.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Grooming operations resumed this morning. All the classic loops have been tracked. There are some uneven areas after the large amounts of snow along with a lot of debris in the trail. The walls on the edges of the trail are falling in towards the groomed portion; making it a bit higher on the outer edge of the trail. The skater's loop remains only open to the warming shelter. Overall the trails are in good condition.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The recent storm brought a large amount of snow again. With the snow came heavy winds and lots of debris in the trail. All the classic loops were packed and rolled today. The skater's loop (Red Trail) was only packed and rolled out to the warming shelter. The drifts near the lake made it impassible with the machine to even drive through. Until conditions improve, that portion of the trail will not be groomed. Grooming efforts will continue tomorrow morning.
