Firsthand: Classic
[ Rock skis ]
What a difference two days makes! On Sunday, I skied the entire 5k snowmaking loop and found great spring conditions. Definitely worth it. Today, I still covered the entire 5k loop but I needed to take my skis off several times to cross stretches of bare ground. There was still a base on maybe 85 percent of the trail but it was pretty much melted down to ice. It might have been softer later in the day. My wife, who skied with me Sunday but went pole-hiking at the same time today, asked, "did you have fun?" I answered: "Only because I was laughing at myself!" I'm a true die-hard but I am declaring my local ski season over!

Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Last day of grooming was March 30th but still a good base on most of the snow-making loop. Started skiing about 11:00 am and the snow was perfectly soft and our old, no-wax classic skis worked great. I skied the entire 5k loop. The only part not skiable was the east side of Frog Pond loop, where water is blocking the trail. Definitely worth it today! Might be good a few more days.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails: Closed, Rock skis ]
Waited until the afternoon in hopes that someone would come before me to blaze a classic track -- and there was a track around the Star loop. The kick wax I had on was way too sticky for the snow, maybe waxless skis would be a better option. I ended up changing to skate skis and did some double poling. If you need to go skiing at Hyland, there is now a track to go on.

Only Star and Willow were open but the conditions were very good. Hard corduroy at the start, started to notice just a touch of slush when I left at 11.

Good skiing still available on the shortened manmade loop. Snow substantially dirtier and with more debris than earlier in the week, but it was freshly groomed, firm and fast.
