Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
I skated at Como this morning, and the trail was mostly in good shape. There are a couple of spots near the beginning of the course with exposed ground and a few patches of dirty snow, but most of the coverage was excellent. There was no ice at the bottoms of the hills, and I didn't encounter any cart paths.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The parking lot was nearly full when I arrived around 4:30, and very icy, which made parking very difficult (thanks to those that helped me!). The skiing, on the other hand, was about as good as it gets for skating, in spite of heavy use. There was even a little corduroy still at the sides. Lights were on for the downhill slopes, including in the back bowl, and there was a floodlight set up that lit up the entire south section by the zoo, so skiing after dark was no problem, at least not up until 7p.m. I enjoyed watching the moon rise a little higher each time I climbed out of the back bowl. Too bad it didn't stay, but maybe it couldn't stand the competition from the floodlight.

Made it out for a nice lunchtime ski. The conditions today were great to go along with the nice weather. The base was firm and groomed. Have fun!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Got out and skied in the afternoon with the wife; she was classicing while I was skating. As expected the coverage was great with the new snow but conditions were slow and piled up. The groomers had rolled that morning (saw them as I ran by at 8am), but the deck was pretty soft. It sounds like they are planning on regrooming the deck and tracks soon. Overall, it was great to get back out without any dirt or ice everywhere after we had our rough weather the last week or two. Como should be back in action for high quality skiing for a while now.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
No classic tracks set, yet other skiers had created a "classic track". Plenty of snow cover, no bare spots. Enjoyable ski. Thanks to the groomer for rolling this morning. Blue wax.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Como received approximately 3-4 inches of fresh snow, and was rolled early this morning. We will let the skiers work their magic, and be back for a grooming by Tuesday at the latest.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Trails had gotten one pass with roller by 9:00 a.m., no track. A lot of loose, deep snow begging to be truly packed and tracked. Hopefully by this afternoon it will get the full treatment. It's gonna be great out there once it sets up. Hurray for a few fresh inches of fresh white joy on the east side!

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
8 pm and 8F degrees; cold but still air, icy and a very damaged course. Classic tracks often disappear. Oddly, open water on the south pond. Nice view of the Capitol lit up in the south and of the ski boarders on the little downhill slope. This course will need some serious snowfall to recover.

Trail was in poor to fair condition. A thin cover of snow over a rough icy base at the front of the course improved to a softer, packed base once you approached the climb to the back of the course that then led to the top of the hill shared with the downhill ski runs. It was 16F degrees or less with a brisk NW wind -- at least it was sunny. I used Blue FastWax LF Despite at least one high school team practicing on the course, I was able to transit the course with only having to pass 4 groups of skiers and nobody dogging me from behind. I wisely chose to switch on my Toko mitts with my wool liners underneath so no problems with my hands but my toes were tingling as I reached the end of the course.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Classic tracks were set and mostly usable, although icy. The skate deck was icy and fast where I stepped out into it. I skipped the loop behind the clubhouse but skied all of the trails on the north side, including by the downhill/sledding hill. Not great conditions, but considering the weather recently it's amazing to have skiable trails at all - thank you groomers!
