Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
We classic skied Mt Ashwabay this morning. The temps were 31F when we arrived and 33F when we left and it was full sun. The neat looking grooming machine was out along with four people shoveling snow onto any open spots so when we went by it was 100% covered. There is not much of a classic track left as they kinda groomed over it so if you plan to do the race, I'd highly recommend skating it. The surface is very even throughout, wide, and flat with no rolling mini moguls, really nice for skating. They scratched up the surface well and there is a significant difference between where they groomed and where they did not. We tested one of the untouched trails and it was pretty hard icy despite the very thin coating of new snow they got last night. If you want a nice, fast skate experience on real snow instead of a "hamster wheel"...this would be very pleasing!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
The groomers successfully broke up the hard pack and left a great surface for the Summit race tomorrow! Thanks to lots of work harvesting some snow from the sides of the trails, there are very few thin spots, the trails look great! The race will be done by noon, come up and ski Saturday afternoon or Sunday if you aren't racing.

I skied the 12k loop that will be used for the Summit Race, and the conditions were very firm and super fast. There are a few dirty sections, and a few thin spots that are easily avoided. The coverage is still pretty good, even after the warm temps yesterday. Grooming plans: We are going out in the morning to patch up the thinnest spots, and try to scratch up the surface with the Ginzus so it's not so slick. Still a lot of white out there!

We checked the trails and until we get more snow we will not be able to groom. The conditions are decent but not awesome. The Buzz is closed.

First time on natural snow this season! Skate skied 26k of the trail system and found it to be fun spring ski conditions. Soft skate deck on most loops with occasional debris here and there. Seagull loop was the most firm and fun. So fun to be skiing in the forest again!

Still in really good condition. Skate deck was very hard and fast but still offered an edge. Classic track were fast. A bit icy with the occasional soft area. There were a few spot were the groomers brought up some dirt but all spots were easily avoidable.

Coverage is great, skate deck is firm and classic tracks are well defined. The few dirty spots were easy to avoid. As of my visit, no ice, though one classic skier I chatted with told me he returned to his car to add klister. The snow has high moisture content and was squeaking under my skis but glide was excellent.
