New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Good Day Skiers, it’s 32º and overcast with 4-5 inches of new snow this morning. Today we packed and set a track on Sugarbush and Oppedahl’s. We also groomed and set a track on Telford, Beginners Loop, lower Dog Road Entrance, Lower Seagull, most of Abbey Road, Anchor, Switch Back, Power Line, and Roller Coaster.

50 some years ago Doc Telford and friends started Cross Country skiing at Mt. Ashwabay. Countless hours of trail work, contributions of hundreds of people, and lots of snow allows me today to take a picture of an almost perfect trail. Note the snow bank on the left. It may look perfect but it’s still a little on the soft side until we groom again. As of Tuesday night (after lots of work by many volunteers) all the trails except for Jolly, Skid Road, Deer Path, and Black Bear are groomed and tracked. Most will ski very well, some softer than others but we are getting just a little spoiled this year.

Firsthand: Classic

Classic skied the Jolly Long trail for the first time this year. I was amazed to see that the trail has been widened. Kudos to all involved in the process of doing that widening. If you are a classic skier such as myself and have stayed away from Jolly Long the past seasons due to being tired of having branches, twigs, bushes and small trees brushing your legs, chest and face as you ski - you need to get out on this new trail. It is awesome. Lots of room for classic folks. The track was good today. A bit of fresh, powdery snow, but still a delight. Great conditions on the way out to Jolly Long on Sugarbush and coming back on Abbey Road. All in all, a great afternoon. Get out and enjoy.

Got 3+ inches of new fluffy lake effect snow yesterday that covered a well groomed base. The tracks had been skied in and it made for gorgeous classic conditions. Skied the Jolly loop, up Opedahls Alley and back along Sugarbush and the top of Anchor. Skate deck was covered but the snow was so light that skis didn't get caught much and you could feel the firm base underneath. Amazing sunny day!

Good Morning Skiers. The trails are in great shape! I’d say excellent but I’s not sure that’s legal at 9º F but it’s January after all and you all know there could be (-) in front of that 9º. 9º, overcast sky, with light lake effect snow showers at 9:00 AM. This morning the following were groomed: the skate lanes close to the trail head on the Beginners loop, Lower Dog Road, Abbey Road, and Anchor. In addition the Jolly skate lanes were groomed which turned-out perfectly. In a normal snow year Jolly doesn’t always get it’s fair share of snow but this year is different, don’t miss the opportunity because Jolly is an awesome trail especially after the dozer work we did last fall.

Trails were all great. Yesterday we did the Jolly long Trail and it was excellent. Today we skate skied the new Deer Trail. We had only previously classic skied on the Deer Trail, which is 12 km around all of Ashaway, but now a good portion of it is newly groomed for skate skiing and it is fantastic. it goes out to and skirts the Sugarbush house, then continues through, then around to the part that is along Whiting Rd., then up the Bear Trail (which also used to be classic only) and then meets up with the Seagull Trail. It is wonderful! Beautiful! The grooming was great, the woods so gorgeous. It the finest skate trail that I've ever been on. All the classic tracks alongside were also great.
