New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

2019-2020 season

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The warm temps on Thursday, followed by a cool-down Friday, led to the trails being icy-fast. The groomers did a great job of scratching up some of the skate decks, especially on the Anchor Trail. Some portions (Jolly Long Loop) have deep frozen ruts from the previous day. Overall, a lot of fun if you don't mind fast trails. Get out and enjoy!

Had a good ski on many Mt. Ashwabay trails early afternoon. Groomer had broken up the crusty surface on the trails we skied but was unable to erase some of the deep skate tracks skiers left behind while skiing during warm conditions earlier this week but they're easy to avoid. Surface was very firm, even a little icy in places. If you make it to the top of Mt. Ashwabay taking Bear Tracks or Seagull trails, take care when descending Swiss Miss, it was broken up with very rough chunks, making it hard to control your downhill. Mt. Ashwabay groomers reported that the Sugarbush tracks have been reset. Take care when classic skiing, striders broke through the tracks into the softer snow below, making the tracks more than ankle-deep in places, the sides grab your ankles. Most classic skiers we saw outside of Sugarbush trail were striding on the flat skate deck. I skijored the dog track to the sugar shack late afternoon, the trail was in decent shape except for the start, which was not groomed. Also, at the crossing with Sugarbush, the trail is interrupted by a berm of ungroomed snow. Not a problem on the way out but it makes the return trip from the sugar shack impossible due to the little steep downhill before crossing Sugarbush trail.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The classic trails are in good condition and the skate lanes are great with a light dusting of new snow. The sun is shining, we still have a ton a snow and the warm weather has served to firm the surface of the trails. This morning set classic track on Sugarbush and touched up the skate lanes on Abbey Road, Anchor, Seagull, Seagull uphill Connector, Switchback, Northern Lights, Swiss Miss, Power Line, and Roller Coaster.

Classic skied some of the new trails and Seagull. The classic tracks are in great shape and skate deck looked really good as well. Descended on Raven and Pines, which aren't groomed yet, but were skiable. Thanks to the groomers for the great work!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The following trails were groomed and set tracks on Beginners Loop, Abbey Road, Skid Road, Northern Lights, Seagull, Seagull Uphill Connector, Anchor, Switchback, Power line, and Roller Coaster. Several trees were cleared off Seagull. Conditions are great, tons of snow, ready for your best skis. I'd rate conditions excellent except we do still have some scattered soft spots which should resolve with a few more groomings. Tuesday we are hoping to open Sugar Bush and Oppedahl's.

Today easy loop, Abbey Road, Northern Lights, Seagull, Anchor, Switchback, Rollercoaster, and Telford were groomed. I'm sure it is all a little soft yet, but should be pretty good skiing otherwise.

Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
I skied this morning. There is a lot of snow. Some of the trails had been rolled yesterday, I think, with about an inch or so of dry powder on top (overnight lake effect snow). No tracks set. I classic skied Seagull though and it was fun and a good workout. Definitely beautiful out there.

Grooming

We groomed and set track on Beginners Loop, Abbey Road, Seagull Up-Hill Skate, Anchor, Power Line, Switch Back, and Roller Coaster. Northern Lights and Seagull have been rolled and flat dragged. Conditions are mixed, with most areas in good to very good condition, with areas that aren't level yet with some ruts. The rest of the trails we have not packed, yet!
