New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Early Saturday morning Abbey Road, Northern Lights, Buzz, Jolly, Anchor, Seagull, and Roller Coaster were groomed with a new track set. A new classic track was set on Oppedahl’s, and Sugar Bush. Skate conditions are excellent, some of the classic tracks are not up to our usual standard but the rest are great, The base is still holding up well with 6-12 inches.

If conditions allow, the plan is to reset the classic tracks on Saturday night. Just wanted to give the Mt. Ashwabay grooming voulnteers another thank you, skied 20 km yesterday classic and the conditions were excellent for the weather. Finished the in-person Birkie early this afternoon. Being able to ski and train everyday at Mt. Ashwabay let me ski my best Birkie yet. Training times at Mt. Ashwabay were right on par with my Birkie time. Thanks to the consistent conditions at Mt. Ashwabay, awesome varied terrain, and rocking dedicated groomers I was able to be better prepared for this Birkie, than others in the past. I'm going to keep skiing the Ashwabay xc trails the remainder of the season and train here for the 2022 Birkie next winter. Thank you Steve and crew! Ski on.

Thursday morning we found 1/2 to 1 inch of new "Superior Lake Effect” snow. All the skate trails were freshly groomed and promise to be perfect for skiing today. The classic tracks were all reset Wednesday and look to be great shape today with a few exceptions in evergreen thickets and in the “Sunny” spots. Conditions are excellent with 12-18 inch base.

Skied the classic virtual Birkie course again today, in just about the same time as yesterday. It's just as much fun the second time around, maybe more because the skier knows where to gain speed. Conditions were great, glide is still fast and even though the temps were warmer, kick was solid. All the local skiers are super nice, giving a person room to ski at speed. The traverse in front of the chalet was slick, safe, and easy on all three laps, Mt. Ashwabay has a fence system separating xc skiers from the crowd. Have fun with this and enjoy the scenery! Ski on.

Well, I'm skiing the Birkie classic in-person on February 26th, but today I decided to ski the virtual Birkie course at Mt. Ashwabay, 3:09. The conditions were amazing. Grooming was awesome. The tracks were solid throughout the entire loop system and skate deck was great. Glide is fast with the temperature, hills were easy to kick up. I definitely recommend Mt. Ashwabay to anyone for a fun, fast, beautiful virtual Birkie location. My only recommendation is to beware of the skiers and snowboarders and random people when skiing in front of the chalet. Today, these people would not move to let a skier by, it was like playing "frogger". I almost got knocked out by a snowboarder on my third lap. With that being said, it was so good I'm skiing it again tomorrow! And if you plan on skiing the virtual Birkie at Mt. Ashwabay, I bet you can beat my time? Ski on.
