New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
All trails except the Buzz were groomed this morning but there are no tracks set on the classic only trails. Tracks on the combined trails are shallow. Groomers report the best tracks on Jolly. ( Thanks groomers!) Use caution near the trailhead, and about the first 400m out to where you cross the power lines. Some gravel at the start, and some big rocks in the skate deck, but after that I saw no rocks. Still, be on the lookout. We skied Abbey Road, up Northern Lights, and down Seagull. Conditions were good, with a few small sections of debris, and some grass and sticks poking out. The skate deck is flat and pretty firm. So happy to be skiing!

Got out and did 40km on the ~12km loop that is currently groomed at Ashwabay. Don't be fooled - the first kilometer of Abbey Road is definitely the worst of the system, with ice and rocks/frozen dirt +gravel. It gets better from there on out, with some debris and gravel in a couple (easily avoidable) spots. Around an inch of light lake effect snow fell while were out which was already helping coverage. We all got some new scratches on our bases, so definitely don't bring your good skis out. No tracks had been laid but I noticed that some folks were breaking their own tracks on the classic only trails. Picture is from Abbey Road just before getting to the sugar shack.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
A big storm came through the other day and our volunteers were busy yesterday clearing trees and down branches and twigs. Today they took a lap on the groomers. The conditions are not ideal but they are skiable. There are still wet areas, grassy spots and lots of twigs and sticks. The groomed loop is groomed for skate only. Conditions did not allow for setting classic tracks. The groomed loop is Abbey Road to Northern Lights to Seagull to the upper branch of Anchor (powerline) and down rollercoaster.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Classic skied 38 km this morning. Conditions were excellent for the amount of snow in the area. Unfortunately, only a few main trails were groomed with a good skate deck and deep tracks. Stick to Northern Lights and Abbey Rd for the best grooming as of now. Phenomenal morning on the trails. Ski on.

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Classic headlamp skied Anchor, Sea Gull, and Northern Lights this evening. Awesome conditions for the amount of natural snow. Set tracks were solid. Skate deck was good. Kick was good and glide was excellent. Noticed a few grassy areas, but they were avoidable. Beautiful night on the trails. Can't wait to ski it in the daylight! Ski on.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
I was on classic skin skis this morning first thing, before any new snow. Conditions were surprisingly good. Not all trails had a track set so I can't comment on the ones that were only rolled. The ones I skied were pretty well covered with some patches of grass, dirt or leaves. Skins worked well. The classic track was pretty well set and deep. In places it was a little soft with good snow underneath. The skating lane looked a little uneven in places but very skiable. I skied for about 90 minutes and didn't see anyone. All in all, good early season conditions on real snow. Don't bring your best skis. Just avoid the occasional bad spots.

Groomed base is 3-4 inches. Trails have been rolled and flat dragged and could be skate skied. Grooming plans: The classic only trails are being rolled tonight and we hope to set some classic tracks tomorrow.
