New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Awesome conditions today! Classic skied 45 km and everywhere I skied and trails I saw on the way were groomed, combed, and tracked. Glide was pretty good with the light dusting of snow, kick was great. The tracks and skate deck are firming up nicely. Well done volunteer groomers! You rock. Thank you. With conditions like this I can work toward a 3:30 classic Birkie and recreational skiers can fully appreciate the beauty of these trails!

So much beautiful snow! Skied Jolly, freshly groomed but with the new, cold snow the tracks were soft (skate deck looked soft too). Abbey Rd was a bit firmer. The classic only trails were groomed in the afternoon, tracks now set on Sugarbush Classic, Deer Path, maybe others? Fantastic skiing!

Took a first time pregnant skier classic skiing at Ashwabay this afternoon. Abbey Road was groomed well, but connecting trails were only flat dragged or had skied in tracks. This made it difficult and frustrating for her. Hope to be able to show her some of the other awesome and serene trails next time, if they are groomed. Until then, I look forward to a 40 something km ski at Ashwabay tomorrow. Ski on.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Classic skied 45 km today. Not all the trails are groomed. It appears they "flat dragged" most all, but did not comb or track most all. I wanted to get my kilometers in so I stuck to a modified version of the 2021 Virual Birkie route. I made three full loops including Anchor, Abbey Road, part of Deer Path, Northern Lights, Seagull, and Buzz. Theses trails were almost fully groomed. I noticed large ridges and partially groomed skate decks on some of these trails that could be irritating. Overall, tracks were firm/soft and skate decks were soft. There was awesome kick and good glide with cold wax. Double poling was tough due to the softness of the trails. Hopefully, it will harden up. I look forward to classic skiing my Birkie training figure 8 on the entire trail system on Friday!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Ashwabay got about 6" of fresh snow last night and we have three wonderful volunteers out grooming today. They flat dragged this morning (7Am) and are laying tracks on the anchor cluster(9am). We plan to continue to work throughout the day.

All skate and classic trails are groomed. Grooming plans: If we get a bunch of snow we will regroom everything tomorrow morning. If we get a little snow we will regroom the skate lanes.

Thank you Mother Nature for the new snow. Classic skied 26 km this afternoon. Not all trails are fully groomed and tracked. The trails that were groomed, combed and tracked were in pretty good condition. The tracks and skate deck are soft and a bit slow due to the freshness of the snow. Look forward skiing the whole thing in the upcoming days, if the groomers can pack it down and set some tracks. Can't wait to get a bunch of 40 km classic skis in at Ashwabay to get ready for the Birkie! Ski on.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
All trails except the Buzz were groomed this morning but there are no tracks set on the classic only trails. Tracks on the combined trails are shallow. Groomers report the best tracks on Jolly. ( Thanks groomers!) Use caution near the trailhead, and about the first 400m out to where you cross the power lines. Some gravel at the start, and some big rocks in the skate deck, but after that I saw no rocks. Still, be on the lookout. We skied Abbey Road, up Northern Lights, and down Seagull. Conditions were good, with a few small sections of debris, and some grass and sticks poking out. The skate deck is flat and pretty firm. So happy to be skiing!
