Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Beautiful conditions just outside of Hayward at the Fish Hatchery trailhead. First time skiing that part of the trail not in the race. Beautiful corduroy, and it's always a treat to break fresh track. I felt so spoiled as I live in the La Crosse area in SW Wisconsin, and our snow is very thin. If you are in the area, go ski the Birkie trail!

Classic skied north from 00 to Firetower Aid Station on Skate trail and back. Half of trail groomed and one track set on west side by Pisten Bully after recent snowfall. Nice. Soft with new snow. Deep track.

I skied northbound from Hatchery Creek. The trail was groomed yesterday and in very good condition, with only a few twigs and dirty spots. Classic tracks on both sides are also very good with occasional twigs or turf.

I classic skied south from Bodecker Rd. Plenty of new snow. The Classic Trail was not recently groomed but skied in and I followed that to the Easy Strider Loop at OO, which was groomed nicely with a few dirt spots here and there. I then continued south and skied the OO trails which were also nicely tracked and groomed for skating. As I headed back north the groomer was also heading north on the Birkie Trail grooming the skate lane and setting a track to the Birkie start area...Beautiful day to be out. Happy New Year!

Really good coverage and grooming at the Birkie trailhead today. Looks like the crew got out to groom the skate trail south to OO. It's a little soft still, but there's only one way to correct that - get out and ski!

Skied at the Birkie Start today. Coverage was good, but conditions were a little strange due to high traffic and new snowfall over the weekend. The snow was either so packed down that you couldn't get an edge, or so soft that your ski would sink in while pushing. The crew was making a few passes with the groomer while I was there, so that combined with the new snow should improve conditions by a lot. They also had the snow machines running, which I found to be a little strange. I wonder what they've got in the works.

Classic skied for an hour from the Boedecker trailhead. The trail had been recently groomed south of Boedecker, full width on both the classic and skate trails. There were three classic tracks set on the classic trail, none on the skate trail. Not quite full depth tracks but good tracks. Hooray!

Went to Boedecker trail head expecting just “rolled” conditions but was happy to see groomed trails and three sets of tracks on the Classic Trail side! Skate deck and tracks are soft as of late afternoon. As I was returning, two groomers came by and groomed over the center track. The Skate trail had no track when I arrived, but when I left at 4:00 it looked like the groomers had added a track. So it appears the Boedecker loop is all groomed!

Another great day at BTH. Outside of the snowmaking loops, the main trail is groomed out along the Power Lines to where the trail re-enters the woods. Birkie classic trail and the old Korte return are also groomed. Off the snowmaking loop the trail is soft-ish and a little thin in spots but still good skiing. There is a single variable depth classic track on the skate trail and Power Lines but not on the classic trail. It was snowing lightly all the while I skied so another little bit of fluff accumulated over the afternoon.
