Notes

2km railroad grade makes for great cruising. Other steeper plunges down to the grade. Trails are in the city of Montreal just west of Ironwood/Hurley. Densely wooded and secluded. Donation box. Connects with 19km Uller trail to Whitecap Mtn, which is even more remote.

Wow have the Penokee Rangers upped their game maintaining this single track classic system. Fresh deep tracks throughout the trail that winds through the former Montreal iron ore mine site. The trail now runs into Pence and after a walk across Hwy 77 continues on for another 4K to connect to the Uller Trail at Hoyt Road. This section is a bit rough and more back country skiing albeit with a set track. All together there is now a 25k trail from Montreal to Whitecap Mountain. Visit the new Penokee Rangers website for maps and more info. The trails are in Wisconsin but get the big snows off Lake Superior like Ironwood.

Skied the Montreal trails today and the tracks were good and fast. There were some oak leaves and small pine tree debris down in some spots due to wind in a few spots. Overall seems to be in great shape.

Very good conditions throughout. Firm pole plants. Good tracks. The trails is being groomed quite regularly these days. It's finally winter.

I arrived at the Rose Wreath TH and was confused when Ye Old Grade wasn't accessible. There is a detour and a new cutoff trail that leads to it. There was a groomer out making another connection to Ye Old Grade closer to the parking. The trails were generally hardened up, but that new trail and Pavlovich Run was very soft and hard to ski. The rest of the trails were decent, with some baby trees coming up. There are new trails (including Pence Loop and the new cutoff) that are on the maps at trail intersections, but I have not found online. Beautiful day!

I checked out Montreal trails on my way back from a four day ski weekend in Ironwood area. Grooming was good with occasional track washouts from use over the weekend. It's a pleasant classic only trail through the woods past interesting historical sites related to the mining community. Signage is excellent along the trail. I accessed it from behind the big Rose Wreath building along 77 in Montreal.
