Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

Observation
[ Rock skis ]
I hoped to ski for awhile at Lester, but conditions did not look promising for anything but rock skis. I did not ski far into the trails because there was too much debris and bare ground showing. I skied up the first hill from the playground area hoping that the trails would be better a bit farther into the woods, but it only looked worse up the next hill so I turned around and did not ski any further. Rock skis only until more snow comes!

Oh my, Lester trail conditions are wonderful right now considering the amount of snow that we have. Skate deck is recently groomed with fresh tracks set as well. Not icy at all thanks to the fresh grooming. Some dirt in the tracks on the way down the west side between the first two parking areas on Seven Bridges Road and skate deck felt a bit "rumble strip" like there, as well. But otherwise very nice. Go have some fun out on the trails this weekend!

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Classic ski was a charming experience under the Thursday night lights. Track was very well-formed. Love to see all the skiers with temps in the mid-teens! I was going to skate the trails but got called away. The skate deck was firm with just the right amount of surface snow to not make it icy.

[ Bare ground ]
The skate deck firmed up nicely with enough loose snow to have full control. The classic track looked just fine and the snow was fast tonight. Word of warning, do not get in the tracks on the short black loop on the N.W. corner of the park (J-a to J-b) about 2/3 the way down, when your at top speed, the snow disappears. Other than that full coverage.

Very good conditions. Track is deep and firm, skate deck looked good. There's a bit of exposed dirt on the J loop, both on the downhill and on the uphill. You can ski around it but I'm going to skip J until we get more snow.

Lester was in really good shape when we skied tonight. Skate deck is hard and fast, classic tracks are in good shape and not washed out. The playground loop has some dirty spots (will probably skip skiing that section until we get more snow), but otherwise good snow coverage on the trails.

The trails were in great condition today. The trails were groomed a day or 2 ago and I could still see groom tracks on the course. Trail was not skied out yet.

Excellent trails at Lester right now - both classic and skate. Great snow coverage, little to no debris in tracks - just beautiful! Thanks to the groomers!

Skated here Tuesday, Wed and Thursday morning. Tuesday was well groomed with good coverage but a bit slick. After Wednesday’s storm it wasn’t groomed when I went but was spectacularly beautiful. Thursday was perfectly groomed and near perfect conditions. Just enough terrain variation to make it interesting, extremely clear signage, lots of choices for distance, enough people but not crowded...and it feels like you are out in the woods but just 10 minutes from downtown. One of the many other reasons I love Duluth.

Packed parking lots and a lot of use. The classic grooming especially seemed quite nice, judging from when I jumped in the tracks for downhills. Note for skating, the skate lane is not groomed as wide as normal on the blue and black loops. I was sometimes catching my left edge in the deep snow and I could tell there had been some skate skiing that extended over the classic tracks in places. Not a big problem I guess unless you are aggressively skating. The classic track was holding up despite this, so far. Still a little soft for skate, particularly on uphills, but to be expected given the inches dumped. Looks like real winter out there.
