Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle

39 F. Full sun, no wind. I used my good skis, which is mostly fine. At night it will be tricky, bring a headlamp. The hill going out of the stadium at the Lester Amity chalet has rocks poking out in about five places. Otherwise most of it is excellent, even the classic track.

I saw the groomer heading out this morning, so I came back at noon for a ski. It's all freshly rolled. They decided to try to lay a track and it burned through to the ground every couple of feet. Conditions are a bit better on the upper loops than the lower loops. The skate deck is in pretty good shape but bumpy, and there's quite a bit of debris. All in all, a bit rough but way better than not skiing.

Trails were surprisingly good after just one snow fall. No classic tracks but was rolled. A little packy but worth getting out. B skis or even good ones, hardly any debris.

Beautiful ski under the lights tonight at Lester. City has groomed entire system, with some skied in tracks set. Lots of snow, no rocks, no gravel, no ice. Thank you City of Duluth for all the trail work this fall. New culverts, rock removal, and an improved flat wider deck makes for excellent early skiing. The Lester Amity Chalet is open everyday now, so come out and ski!

Afternoon

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Every section open and groomed for skate. Definitely rough and wavy, but every section is skatable, even the fun little side boops. No rocks, just the usual sticks and grass.

First ski of the season! Trails are criss crossing everywhere. The groomer was out this morning. Worthy of a ski if you can’t wait to get out! Skate skis might be rough.

Skied with fish scales (B skis) and it was nice to be out again! There's quite a bit of debris - mostly sticks and leaves but no rocks - so B skis are a good option. The snowmobile roller groomer was out when I was to make a soft deck for skaters and the surface is definitely uneven due to low snow levels. He was great, even clearing a tree on the trail - thank you! Worth it to get out but still hoping for more snow soon!

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Nothing groomed, but a solid track has been cut in by skiers. Four inch depth packed down to 1-2 inches, but nearly complete coverage in the tracks.
