Notes

This is a remote trail that is groomed by volunteers for classic skiing that goes thru jackpine forests, black spruce swamps and over glacial eskers. A skier will probably see more tracks of deer, wolves and moose that they will of other skiers. A snowshoe trail is also starts by the trailhead. Located two miles south of Hellman's Store on CR 44.

Skied around 10AM. Tracks were set and good in most spots but I can tell it hasn't been groomed in awhile. Beautiful trail and worth the drive from Duluth. Tons of moose tracks!

I skied the north and south loops Saturday afternoon, minus the northwest section. Most of the north trails were freshly groomed, tracks were set and skied in everywhere else. Good coverage, there was some fresh snow falling and filling in the tracks, so it wasn't the fastest, but it was smooth and quiet. The snow on the trees was gorgeous.

Finished grooming after 3.5" new snow in the past 2 days. All sections are open except the far NW where a logging operation is going on. Conditions are great, with beautiful snow flocked trees.

Wonderful conditions with a beautifully groomed classic-tracked trail and snow-flocked trees. On a few of the downhills with turns near the bottom, the track smears out so you have to keep an eye out and push off with one ski. Love skiing under an imaginary glacier in the esker section on the south trail.

The trails were last tracked a few days ago but are still in very good condition. The snow is not icy or sticky and is fast. All trails are open except for one being logged at the far end at the far end. The separate snowshoe trails are also packed and in good condition.

Best tracks we've been on all year! Arrived just after the groomer had been through so the conditions were mint! We skied over to the south loops and had a wonderful ski. Last year we skied that area in icy conditions and couldn't believe it was rated as an easy trail especially up on the ridgeback hills! In these conditions it was perfect and very enjoyable. As we looped back the loggers had plowed the access road to get their equipment in so we had to remove our skis to cross back. (See photos) Thanks for grooming after all the fresh new snow!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
We received about 1 1/2" new snow, so freshened up some of the trails. Your best bet is to ski the south loop. Still a little rough in the swampy areas after the big melt down. Section from 7 to 8 is closed because of an active logging operation.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Trail was groomed today after 4.5" new snow; we now have about 10" on the ground. A little rough in the swamps, but not too bad overall. #7 to #8 is closed because of an active logging operation.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Trail was packed, and downed trees removed. Not enough snow to set a track, as the 8" of fluffy snow have packed down to about 3", so any skiing will need rock skis. There is an active logging operation going on, so the trail is closed from 7 to 8.
